Never paid any attention since I never use the auto shutoff mechanism.

No. I think it's against the law to not have an auto shut off.

Worked at a station many many years ago that did not have auto-stop pump handles. This was in the 50's and I know they were around, but we did not have them.

I have not, this predates me but I can see it being a challeng e... (Filling a 1 gallon tank for lawnmowers is about as tough if you don't carefully watch!) Is there any other way than carefully listening to the tank as it fills or guessing how many gallons you need to tell when to stop adding gasoline, or were there a lot of overfills when automatic shutoff was not available?

No. Having worked at an ARCO station in 1968-1969 we had several pumps malfunction contrary to what you've described jono0143 (the pressure change did not prevent the flow of fuel). They were placed out of service immediately until repairs could be made. Note, these were the full serve days so we knew when a pump was going bonkers. I would add that even if a pump has auto shut off, stay with it as they do malfunction. Sometimes the problem is the design of the filler tube and/or tank, but mostly on older vehicles.
I like your post from Wickipedia and will check out the entire article later. It would be nice if you could use the Insert Link to read the entire article. I had a bit of a problem learning that and several GBs helped me out. I didn't realize you had to "Post Message" for the link to be created. One thing to avoid the wrath of a GB is to always check the link to assure it works before your five minute edit session times out. Take care :-) .

I've had them fail to work on modern pumps at least once in the last 10 years. Not sure how much gas was pumped on the ground but I heard it while cleaning the windows and shut if off quickly. Couldn't get any money back for the gas I didn't want or need.

actually I have, I worked in a factory where we gassed up forklifts from a tank with a hand crank. had to be careful otherwise gasoline would be everywhere.
Thankfully they went to propane and got rid of the gasoline powered forklifts.

It's not WATCH WHAT YOUR DOING/ It's Watch what you're doing, dummy. Can't believe you made that horrible spelling error. I was horrified.
