movrshakr -- I have never had that problem with gas station/convenience stores. I have been denied my cash back reward when I purchased gas at the Meijers gas stations in the OH and IN area.. When I ask the question to my credit card company I was told it was because of the "code" that is used to identify the business. If they use the same code for gas as they do for the department/grocery store it is not looked at as a gas purchase. With my credit cards (Discover and a PenFed Visa) I have received my cash rebate when buying gas at the exchange gas stations/class VI.... I guess it has a lot to do in how your credit card handles it and what codes they have listed as "gas stations".. The Meijers stores was the only place this has happened to me.... If you are not familiar with a Meijers store it is like a Super Wal*Mart with a Murphy Gas station...

yeah, but how do you know? The people you ask at the stores have no clue, and you can't test it because the items on the statement don't tell you what percentage they are earning.
"They" don't want you to know, IMNSHO.

Hey, movrshakr, I had several Chase cards myself, and yes, I had this problem. It is also a problem with other types of rebate cards, including grocery stores, hardware stores, etc. The stores hve to be "registered", sort of, with the card provider. And even then, discount grocery stores such as Walmart do not count/do not qualify for grocery store types of rebates. Same with the gas providers. You have to search around and find a cheap; one that DOES qualify, and use it/ or them, as much as possible in order to get the most out of your Chase or Discover cards.

Regarding the Class Six store where I was purchasing the gas....yes, I was a contractor on base, but that only put me constantly near the facility. I was authorized to *use* it because I am retired military. Just wanted to make sure that was on record.

movrshakr queried: "celtic14, which card did you switch to?"
We already had a regular Discover card. A single phone call switched it to the gas discount card effective the next billing cycle.

I just found some interesting info on the Discover Card gas rebate.
"The catch? Discover has set a limit of $100 a month on gas and auto purchases eligible for the 5% rebate, which means cardholders can't get more than a $5 rebate per month at that rate. After reaching the cap, borrowers receive a rebate at the standard 1%. "

movrshakr, Interesting about the AAFES, thought that might be a problem myself.

By the way, it occurs to me that when I was suspicioning that I was not getting the right rebate amount, I was buying almost all of my gas from the AAFES Class Six location on a military base (I worked for a contractor on the base). That facility is similar to a 7-11...convenience store plus ABC store with pumps outside. Maybe that was the only one not being counted as a gas sale.

We just switched our Discover card to one with the extra gasoline rebate. The statements on the current card break down by category, and gas bought at RaceTrac, Sunoco & others show up as "gasoline" even though those stations also have convenience stores on site. I'll check next month's statement to insure we're getting the correct rebate.

Wow, great analysis. I am coming to the conclusion it is too fuzzy and too hard. The amounts were "close" to right, but not perfectly right--so I will just go with it.
Of course, if they cheat just a little on everybody's amounts, it would add up to millions for them.

Hi movrshakr,
I haven't seen anywhere on the statement that breaks down the Transaction Description. Online, you can review your activity (See activity) and it will also give you the type of transaction next to the Merchant Name or Transaction Description within parenthesis for each individual purchase. I believe you have to review the activities before your statement is ready because they won't be available for review for prior months activities. There isn't any clean break down for Gas alone and is included within Vehicle Expenses.
Examples:
Hess (Vehicle Expenses) Auto Repair (Vehicle Expenses) Motel (Lodging) Cafe Eatery (Dining and Entertainment) Food Store (Other) AAA Renewal (Other) Appliance Store (Other)
and the rebates applies as follows:
Hess (Vehicle Expenses) 3% Auto Repair (Vehicle Expenses) 1% Motel (Lodging) 3% sometimes 1% Cafe, Eatery (Dining and Entertainment) 3% sometimes 1% Food Store (Other) 1% AAA Renewal (Other) 1% Appliance Store (Other) 1%
-------------------------------
I just went thru my statements and NONE of the
(statement)-rebates from gas $6.20 (actual gas rebate $3.73) or (statement)-rebates from purchases $8.36 ( actual $10.83)
were correct except when I didn't have any gas purchases. When I calculated each individual purchase for which I thought the 3% or 1% rebate should be applied to the individual purchases, then the (statement)-Total remaining rebates $14.56 and actual calculated rebates were the same.
--------------------------------
As far as how any of the purchase are coded from the Merchant to the Credit Card Co., is beyond me. So it doesn't surprise me that the rebates you calculate from gas and other purchases don't equate according to my cc statements. Remember to round-up to the penny when calculating the rebate for each purchase.
Example Gas with 3% rebate if 7-ELEVEN is included:
46.20 AAFES Class Six = 1.386 rebate 1.39 36.22 Hess = 1.0866 rebate 1.09 18.77 "Sunoco svc station" = .5631 rebate .57 20.78 7-ELEVEN = .6234 rebate .63 27.78 Hess = .8334 rebate .84
Total rebate rounded $4.49 = rounded-up $4.52
Your Statement read
-rebates from gas $5.05 -rebates from purchases $12.23 -Total remaining rebates $17.28
and should have read
-rebates from gas $4.52 -rebates from purchases $12.76 -Total remaining rebates $17.28
Your total purchases based on your rebates could have been approximately anywhere between $576 to $1728. If you eliminate gas purchases of $150, the remaining purchases could have been anywhere between $426 and $1578.
Bottom line-- You'll have to scrutinize each line item purchase to calculate your rebates at either 3% or 1%.
Again, I hope this helps and sorry this message is sooo long. Please let me know what you calculate now.
Thanks

blustar, how do you see which items got what percent of rebate?
My Perfectcard statement just shows a summary of rebates -prev bal $31.69 -rebates from gas $5.05 -rebates from purchases $12.23 -redeemed this period $31.69 (bought a refrigerator last month) -remaining $17.28 but nothing shows what lines in the detail section created the $5.05 calculation. Here are what I see as the gas purchases on this statement: 46.20 AAFES Class Six 36.22 Hess 18.77 "Sunoco svc station" 20.78 7-ELEVEN (do these count as gas? How do they know if it was food or gas?) 27.78 Hess ------ 149.75 3% of that is 4.4925; but I was awarded 5.05. So, this month, I got more! 3% of what number would give me 5.05? 168.33 They computed on 18.58 more than I add up, but there is not ANY charge on the statement near that amount, much less a gas one! So, ?????????
Again, I wish they would mark each line with a code symbol that equated to the percent rebate applied to that line. I don't think they want you to track what they do.

I have a Chase Perfect Card and I went back thru the whole last year's statements. This is the breakdown of the rebates on purchase types.
Gas 3% Dining and Entertainment 1% sometimes 3% Lodging 3% Lodging (independently owned) 1% Other 1%
All rebates for purchase in the month of November for some reason were at 3%. Must have been a special going on.
One thinng that's confusing is that at the bottom ,the REBATE CREDIT is for the previous month's purchases. Also the percentage of the rebate is rounded up ( purchase $34.25 X 1%= $.3425 rebate is $.35).
At least that's the way it broke down for me.
Hope this helps........

I've used my Discover card for gas for years, and am signed up for their extra cash-back, but I really can't see if there has been anything extra credited.
They don't show details.
