With the Daytona 500 this weekend, gas prices throughout the area have skyrocketed recently. A station in DeLand is up 12 cents from Thursday morning, while two stations in Leesburg (65 miles away) are up by the same amount -- one since Thursday, the other since Tuesday. Other area stations have raised their prices anywhere from 5-10 cents this week. No way can the recent spike in crude prices account for all of this. It's just station managers taking advantage of the increased demand, just as hotels raise their rates for special events. (I don't even want to think about how much a room in Daytona costs right now!)
Fortunately I refueled before this run-up, and with a 55-mpg car I can wait until the race fans go home and prices co come back down before doing so again.
