I think we should all be using electric cars charged on a power grid fueled by nuclear power plants. No coal, no Petroleum, no ethanol, no hydrogen, no wind, no nothing. Once we learn how to fully tap into solar energy, we can close down the nuclear plants. So if I was in charge of things, I would be directing all the government research money into battery/charging technology so we can get reasonably priced battery cars out to the public with 200-300 mile ranges. Once that is done, air pollution, noise pollution, and much of the water pollution will be a thing of the past. And now you ask me what to do with all the spent uranium rods when they start to stack up? Send them up on a rocket; destination: the sun. Fini

Each chance I get I run it in my 2005 Pt Cruiser non ffv and has had no repairs of any kind running a 60% plus mix. No matter what you say or print will not change my use and I get 25 mph on the highway.

Unless you're going to direct them to get out of the way, these are just about the last people we want running things in the real world. Their quick tossing of money at problems just skews the science by making everyone chase the grants and grab as much of that free cash as quickly as possible. The free market has to produce technologies that actually make sense and not just meet subsidy guidelines. Nuclear is a clear winner at this point of human development. Japan has just turned their back on the future and it will be interesting to see the fallout there. Sorry about 'fallout', I should have said outcome. Solar and other similar technologies have a way to go before they are cost effective and efficient so your idea of running on nuclear during the development phase is excellent. Unfortunately, the overabundance of natural gas will now slow down development of alternate technologies but this will still happen when needed.....unless the government gets involved of course. Keep those good thoughts coming.

Thats great if society could survive moving only payloads of 100 to 400 pounds. But, if you want clothes to wear, food to eat, homes to live in, the producers of these products still need to move payloads of 100,000 pounds and more. That's going to be hard to do with batteries. By the time the government has spent enough money to develop these power sources, private sector will have perfected the teleporter. But, once everyone is forced into an electric car, the size of a refrigerator, the planet will still have air pollution, noise pollution, and water pollution.

The problem is the technology used for batteries to hold the charge. One of the most worked on problems with portable electronics is battery life between charges. Think laptops and smart phones. Now take something like a car that takes that much more power to run and look at what we have for batteries to hold the charge. That is the problem. No one wants to go on a trip, drive 100-300 miles and have to park and charge over night to continue on the trip.
