Novozymes Drops as Ethanol Turns Unprofitable: Copenhagen Mover

"Novozymes A/S (NZYMB), the world’s largest maker of enzymes used for biofuel, was the second-biggest loser on Copenhagen’s benchmark index today on concern sales may suffer after U.S. ethanol production turned unprofitable."

"Novozymes controls almost 60 percent of the U.S. market for enzymes used in biofuel production, and bioenergy enzymes accounted for 17 percent of the Bagsvaerd, Denmark-based company’s 2011 revenue. Ethanol futures yesterday fell to the lowest level in more than a week in Chicago trading."

"With gasoline consumption waning, the U.S. is on course to miss its ethanol target for the first time and producers aren’t making money at current prices, according to Wallace Tyner, an agricultural economist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. U.S. refiners are required to mix 13.2 billion gallons of renewable products with motor fuels this year, up 4.8 percent from last year."

This is bad news for ethanol fans, but certainly not surprising. When you knock out the crutch that was propping up an unsustainable energy industry, the house of cards will eventually come crashing down.

DuPont Statement: Danish Appeals Court Revokes Preliminary Injunction in Novozymes vs. Danisco, Awards Danisco 1.5 million DKK in Costs

The article also mentions something about patent problems with ethanol production... what does patent invalid mean...

"This decision comes the same month as a court in Wisconsin, United States, also found in favor of Danisco in a separate patent case between Novozymes and Danisco, finding a Novozymes patent related to enzymes in the ethanol industry invalid."

"Novozymes A/S (NZYMB), the world’s largest maker of enzymes, traded at the highest price in a month in Copenhagen on speculation it will boost sales in Brazil.
Novozymes rose as much as 3 percent to 159.20 kroner, the highest since April 24. The stock advanced 2.9 kroner, or 1.9 percent, to 157.50 kroner at 10:01 a.m. in the Danish capital.
Graal Investimentos SA’s biofuel unit said yesterday it will build five plants in Brazil to produce ethanol from sugar- cane residues. Bagsvaerd, Denmark-based Novozymes said it will also build new facilities in the South American country because it will supply the five plants with enzymes.
Novozymes reported on April 25 a 9 percent decline in first-quarter sales, measured in local currencies, in part because its ethanol-producing clients used fewer enzymes."

Chemist74 - "Currently, Congress requires the oil companies to continue to increase the amount of ethanol they buy to blend into gasoline , regardless of price, so unless this law is changed, novozymes is essentially guaranteed some market in the U.S."

So who is going to pay for their losses as they produce an unprofitable product?
