Corn, corn syrup, and cornstarch are foods. While they're not ones I currently eat (low carb diet), they are still foods. They are not items of apparel (my attitude to starch got me in trouble in the Army) nor do I consider them a constituent of auto fuel (not that I have a lot of choice here in California for about half the year). We are in the area described by The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by confusing categories in our daily life. [Edited by: rossp at 3/15/2012 2:33:34 PM EST]

There are other bio compounds which are easier and cheaper to make which can be mixed with gasoline. CNG is an excellent motor vehicle energy source, but it requires vehicle modifications. Biodiesel uses less energy and costs less to make than ethanol, but the EPA has come down hard on diesel emissions resulting in engines which can not tolerate fuel variations.
