Rising fuel prices is causing drivers to put the brakes on unnecessary trips. That is also having an impact on ethanol production in Nebraska. Troy Gavin with Midwest Renewable Energy is the general manager of ethanol plant near Sutherland and he tells us that is one reason but there is more to it than that. He says there were problems on the horizon when VEETC (Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit) expired in 2011. He says that created an oversupply in storage as ethanol was bought before that tax credit ended. He says they knew that would create an oversupply in storage and they are trying to work through that supply-demand imbalance.

Gavin says tanks are

Ethanol is a fine alternative fuel if:
1) It is made from materials other than sources for people or animal feed.
2) The vehicle has been designed to use ethanol.
3) The price per gallon is less than a gallon of gasoline.

Obama flatly stated in 2008 that energy prices needed to be higher.

EPA commissar Chu stated recently that he does not want lower gas prices.

September 2008 EPA commissar Chu stated gas prices should go to 10$/gal. , like Europe.

“But is the overall goal to get our price —”, asked Nunnelee, who didn’t finish the sentence.

“No, the overall goal is to decrease our dependency on oil, to build and strengthen our economy,” Chu replied.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu acknowledged Tuesday at a Senate hearing that he indeed told the Wall Street Journal in September 2008 that getting U.S. prices up to higher, European-level gas prices would help move Americans to use more renewables.

But with rising gas prices sinking the president's approval rating in some new national polls, Chu says he has had a change of heart.

Candidate Obama in 2008 stated “under my plan, of a Cap and Trade system, electricity rates would clearly skyrocket”.http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2008/07/15/oil-drops-over-6-barrel-i-wonder-why

There wouldn't be a problem if ethanol production was stopped and another form of alternative energy was considered as a replacement.

There are always going to be consequences to every quick seemingly great decision. I am sure they understood that up front, however I can bet you that they did not have a plan for it.

Although it has gotten me in trouble in the past, I always distinguish between the categories of food and (a) apparel and (b) auto fuel, among other things.

Corn, corn syrup, and cornstarch are foods. While they're not ones I currently eat (low carb diet), they are still foods. They are not items of apparel (my attitude to starch got me in trouble in the Army) nor do I consider them a constituent of auto fuel (not that I have a lot of choice here in California for about half the year).

We are in the area described by The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by confusing categories in our daily life.

Why would we care that they have a oversupply! The tax credit ended and now we need to stop adding this crap to our fuel supply.

Ethanol was a bad solution all along. There are other bio compounds which are easier and cheaper to make which can be mixed with gasoline.

CNG is an excellent motor vehicle energy source, but it requires vehicle modifications.

Biodiesel uses less energy and costs less to make than ethanol, but the EPA has come down hard on diesel emissions resulting in engines which can not tolerate fuel variations.
