Author Topic: Thanksgiving retail sales hit record, crude prices rev up... Post a Reply Back to Topics

Lower gasoline prices were nice... while they lasted. Preliminary Black Friday sales results came in today, and they showed that sales were among the highest ever recorded. What do record retail sales mean? People are out spending, and the economy is in decent condition. Unfortunately, that also means that people are out driving to shop, and with the sign that people are spending, it'll likely mean more vacations and more travel in general, which all results in *higher oil demand*.

It's no myth- with a healthy economy, we use more petroleum, thus boosting the price (the U.S. isn't the only country in the world that uses oil, and when our economy is healthy, it helps economies around the world that also start using more petroleum)...

most people already shot their whole wads in trying to get Black Friday bargains. Now let's see how the first weekend went, and then the new November unemployment rate nationally on Friday, Dec 2.

FDR set Thanksgiving as the THIRD Thursday in November to extend the holiday shopping season. O'Bummer would never have any ORIGINAL thoughts like that. It was not on his tele-prompter.

They're always happy to have another reason to raise prices.

I think the indicators are overlooking this recession. People are buying during the sales because they can't afford to buy the rest of the year anymore. The market should pickup on this and correct itself sooner than later ;)

Something is strange here. Why should record sales mean higher oil prices. Is big oil trying to milk consumers for all they can?

Finally a reason to raise gas prices. At least they have the way to shut down a fragile economy.

something is not right, high unemployment, recession double or maybe triple dip, high gas prices, high oil prices, high food prices. even high inflation., and record foreclosures. But people can shop alot on black friday to cause oil prices to go higher.

Watch spending now. Pump prices increased $0.24/gallon in south central Michigan today, Nov. 28, 2011.

What country are you living in. The economy is terrible. Just wait to see how the rest of the year ends up. High discounts (low profits) fueled the sales. The rest of the season will be marginal

Either all these people are gainfully employed and just received major pay increases or they are spending more than they earn. I would prefer to believe the latter, especially in this economy.

I do not see the economy getting much better in my neighborhood. Has been the same, stagnant with less jobs or only very low pay jobs, for a cuople of years.

I read where folks had only and average of .1% increase in incomes but were spending .4 percent more. It sound like the way government spends more than they earn. We all see what a deal that results in. Not a way to manage government spending either.

We need to quickly move to domestic natural gas as our primary fuel and aggressively move away from our foreign crude oil addiction. Screw BIG OIL, The Republicans, Hugo Chavez and Abdul!

Hopefully the Saudi's will keep the price about the same. (Increased supply to meet increased demand will keep the price the same.) It would be nice if the Saudi Prices could figure out that a healthy economy benefits us all.
