The article does not mention vehicle safety features or its crash rating. A safe, reliable, and economical car is all most people want. The Prius certainly seems to qualify on the economy side. We also need more running time to determine which battery technology is the best. If the manufacturer will accept all the risk via a strong warranty, it would make it more attractive to purchase. If a battery replacement cost more than the gas you save, its a net zero. If the car is not built with a strong, safe structural design, many more will not be interested at any price.

I hope this car forces the other manufacturers to see that you can create a good economical car with out price gouging consumers ie Chevy Volt.

Why so much displacement? A 1.0 three cylinder is all that is needed.

Nicely done Toyota, I still love my Prius after 5 years & it was well worth the price, I saved enough in gas compaired to my old car that I was able to make double payments on it...

This may vault Toyota to the top of the heap again. Perfect timing. Still you are paying a lot of money for the extra mileage. Many people would not save enough on gas to justify the "hybrid premium".

I wonder how good it goes in the midwest snow? Too me, my guess is not to good, wheels too small and no ground clearance. Looks like a warm weather vehicle to me !

For those who need to get from point A to point B with working heat/AC and a radio the basic Prius will save you the most money over time. When gas prices reach $4 - $5 - $6 - $7 ... you'll be saving even more when compared to other vehicles.

by the time I'm ready to buy a new car, in ... oh, some 6 or 8 years, the hybrid market probably has changed tremendously, but it's worth keeping up w/ the changes.

Correct. Toyota planned to build the Prius at the new Blue Springs, MS plant, but switched to the Corolla. The current expectation is that the Gen 4 Prius will be built in the U.S. I think that's due in 2016.

I don't think the Prius is being made / assembled in America.
As far as mileage, I bought my 2010 Prius in May 2010. I was hoping to get upper 40's... I have averaged 50MPG last 2 years. That includes some very hard miles (commutes of less than a mile to / from train station in winter / Snow).
And I have more room than the 2002 Mercury Sable that it replaced.
Toyota is offering the Prius V which has more room that most small suv's and with the Prius C an economical small vehicle. They will likely be selling 25K cars in 2012 and maybe more if gas prices go above $4 in most of America...

Why is it that we never hear about the new Volkswagen tdi diesel that gets 73 mpg, and does it without all the hybrid gear under the hood?

Whats with all the negative naysayers? My wife has a 2011 Prius and she gets just shy of 50 MPG city driving this time of year, and she doesn't even drive it any different then any other car we've owned. I've always been able to increase the MPG over what she is getting when I drive, cause I drive more conservatively! Just about every vehicle I've ever owned I've been able to exceed the sticker MPG. First trip out of state with the Prius (only 400 miles on it so not broken in yet) with 70% freeway 30% city driving I got 53.1 actual miles (512.6 miles on tank, 9.652 gallons). And that wasn't even trying!

. No it wasn't a Toyota owner suing it is a Honda owner.
But the point remains that not a single vehicle gets the posted estimated mileage. Moreover Toyota has been fined three times for posting estimates that can't even be reached under perfect conditions when it comes to the Prius!
Buyer beware on any vehicle that has a better city mileage then a highway mileage. These vehicles get that high number by being driven in conditions you will never see.
And what is the big deal here? Ford has a car that gets almost 70 mpg without batteries but Congress will not let them build it here or import it!

I bought a new Prius and save about $200-$300. month in fuel at least. Saved $50 a month over car payments. So a much better deal at least for me.
