Duffer you neglected to mention Sam jones and K.C. Jones. Russell twice. For as many teams as there were at the time, I gotta think that talent-wise Cigar boy was way top heavy, over anything Jackson ever had. By the way, I am not a Jackson fan. He doesn't stress defense near enough for my taste.

You mean Russell, Havlicek, Cousy, Sharman and the others WEREN'T some of the greatest players ever? I dare say Red had a greater set of gifted players at one time than Phil ever has.
In all honesty, the two are separated by such a slim margin that it is virtually indistinguishable. Let's just say that the two of them comprise spot 1A and 1B of the all-time greatest NBA coaches.

Jackson sure has had some great stars to work with, so it makes it that much easier. I mean he has had three of the greatest players to ever play the game under his wing (Jordan, Shaq, Kobe). If Jackson were to lead a .500 (or worse) team to ten championships, there wouldn't be an ounce of over hype.
A perfect example that the players make the biggest difference is the Celtics. Two years ago they won like 24 games under Doc Rivers, then Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen came to town. Bam, championship. Anyone in Boston can tell you Doc Rivers is not a superb coach and the Celtics still prevailed.

Draftee, I agree with the first part of your statement, but strongly disagree with the second. Perhaps it's with just a bit of jealousy that you regret Jackson has moved a step ahead of Red Auerbach. I really don't think you can say he is overhyped when he has more titles and a higher winning percentage in both the regular season AND playoffs than Red did. Red is regarded as one of the best coaches all-time. Jackson's stats are better in almost every category. Hard to argue with that logic, especially since Jackson has coached in the age of free agency, where players are leaving every year and going to the high bidder.

Great, another title to fuel Kobe's arrogance.
And another title to further over hype Phil Jackson's legend.

Despite winning a game, Magic were never in it. Congrats to Jackson and the Lakers on the Championship, despite all the knocks from the media!

Like I said. If the Lakers bring effort no team in the NBA belongs in the same gymnasium. If you are going to the parade good luck. I think we imported our local celebrants from Detroit

I hate to admit but they're gonna win. They are the dominant team. Eve when they lose, they almost win.

I think rearranging letters in names is the thing to do. Zim, It is the "Lickers" . Since Boston has Big Fat Baby they are "The Slobtics"

Zim You have to admit that if the lakes bring defensive effort nobody can play in the same gym with them. That really is a ginormous IF.

Zim, I apologize if I came off a little harsh; I spend a lot(sometimes too much) of time on the ESPN boards and the trolling, generalizing, illogical nonsense, juvenile name-calling, causes me to lose control and lash out sometimes . . . I love my teams, and I CERTAINLY have teams/fanbases I dislike, but I try to discuss sports in a non-biased way as much as I can, without letting personal feelings/emotions get into it . . .

Touché Magnum, considering the source it was unfair to generalize like that. Well clearly the Celtics will always be better than the Lakers. lol

Zim, just because one *alleged* Lakers fan makes an absurd statement, doesn't mean you need to generalize ALL Laker fans as being/thinking the same way; of course, since typing "Fakers" never seems to get tiring for you, it's not like Tatalah really gave you "more than enough reason", ALL Celtic fans can't be uniformly bitter haters like you seem to be, can they? I don't want to generalize . . .

"The competition is so far below their level that they will probably win, almost, by default. "
OMG, comments like this are more than enough reason to hate the Fakers and their arrogant fans.

I really do not think that the Lakers are putting forth the EFFORT to deserve to win a championship. The competition is so far below their level that they will probably win, almost, by default.

Howard is a beast, just as Shaq was, If he works the Lakers they lose. If Jackson can find a way to take him out of the game--and the Lakers show up--Lakers in 6.

After the Magic dismantled the Cavs, a total shock in my opinion, I'm not entirely sure they'll be a pushover against the Lakers. I think the Lakers will still prevail, though.

It's amazing the transformation Al Davis has made in the last thirty years. He has run the gamut from NFL "genius" to the broken down, senile, stubborn, bitter old man of today. It's reAlly too bad that he still believes in his former "genius" and insists on drafting his players according to that. The game has changed immensely since he was at the top and he has had the most trouble of any owner trying to keep up.

duffer, I became a LOS ANGELES Raiders fan in 82' and remained a fan when they moved back to Oakland(I'm just a RAIDERS fan, won't buy or wear gear that says Oakland), haven't stepped off the bandwagon in 27 years, though the senile jackass who runs them seems to be trying harder and harder to make me . . . I am literate, gainfully employed and never been on welfare, have never been in jail or in a gang, have never stabbed or shot anyone(don't even own a gun); hmmm, if there's any other Raider fan stereotypes I haven't covered let me know, I can refute them all . . .
Tatalah, after last night I hope you're still "stuck"; if you're upset because you feel the Lakers should have won by double-digits by hitting a few of those missed FTs, that's acceptable . . .

I still think you are overreacting(and letting a personal beef w/ Kobe get to you), but again I understand your frustration if nothing else; it's a free world and you're an adult who can do what you like, but if you go to the trouble of making a bold and deliberate statement like "I am getting rid of all my Laker gear and refuse to watch them anymore" on a public forum like this, I would hope you have enough strength in your convictions to not try to reclaim your fan status when/should the Lakers go on to win the title this year . . . different circumstances but I grew up a die-hard Rams fan in L.A. in the 70s; years of getting my heart broken in the playoffs and the final straw, that **** Georgia F. moving the team to OC, led me to the same decision you're apparently making now and the Rams became dead to me; I became a Raiders fan and despite Al Davis' stupidity/senility and years of on-field embarrassment and ineptitude, I remain a "diehard" Raiders fan . . . don't look back if you go down this road Tatalah . . .

Magnum I couldn't help myself. I had to watch game 7. This was not a casual feeling. Casual would have been to not be a fan when they brought in Malone and Payton over Chick Hearn's dead body. I guess I maybe just have a problem with Kobe's leadership. I felt we should have another championship this year and I cannot see us getting it. This is unacceptable. It is hard to accept a sub-par EFFORT

Tatalah, you raise very valid points but also express certain things I find troubling . . . I am as angered and sickened as you at the Lakers' inconsistent effort and desire, but not NEARLY enough to revoke my "diehard fan" status, like you are so casually ready to do after 49 years, wow . . . forget that they actually won the series against Houston even if it took more games than it should have, you want to "get rid of all my Laker gear" and "refuse to watch them anymore", you sound like the type of fickle, shallow person that people around the country like to ridicule and stereotype L.A. as being full of, not a "diehard" fan . . . I want to say "good riddance" but that would be mean . . .

Charles Barkley was so on last night. He said that the Lakers are so good but they refuse to bring it every game. For this reason they do not deserve to win a championship. He also said that he is P.O. ed at them for this, which are my sentiments exactly. I have been a diehard fan since 1960. I suffered listening to them lose every year on the radio because the local games were blacked out. (Thank God for Chick Hearn). I still cannot forgive Kobe (the headcase) for throwing the championship against Detroit. I don't have to forgive Shaq since he is gone. Time for Kobe to exit stage left.

Experience will probably play a big part in that series and experience is on the side of the Lakers, except for Billups. He could be the ace in the hole for the Nuggets.

Even if the Lakers defeat those depleted Rockets, I don't think there's a way they'd be able to handle the Nuggets. Denver is looking really tough right now.

Some of those you name aren't dead yet....they may be getting more and more disturbed, but aren't buried yet.
Shaq was right, "He can't win without me."
