Notre Dame chooses shot at College Football Playoff over Michigan rivalry

The Notre Dame vs. Michigan rivalry is fun, but the Irish are smart to forgo their annual battle with the Wolverines to improve future chances of making the College Football Playoff, writes Matt Hayes in this week's Cover 4.

Michigan QB Devin Gardner granted sixth year of eligibility

Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner has been granted a sixth year of eligibility after getting a medical hardship clearance. That is huge for the Wolverines, who saw Gardner come on strong at the end of last season.

Over the last five seasons, Michigan has ranked as one of the worst teams in the Big Ten at rushing the passer, sitting just ninth among the league's 12 teams in accumulating 121 quarterback takedowns.

This has been painfully obvious since RR took control of the team. You rarely see sacks in key situations, nor even pressure on long 3rd downs. This has certainly opened the Secondary up for missed coverages as pass plays develop.

Take note Carr haters;

"Michigan's five-year haul of 121 represented a significant drop from the previous five years, when U-M had 151 sacks from 2003-07, including a high of 42 in 2006."

"Hard to disagree with that.....had that coming"

lol, you know I couldn't let that slide!

I'm just glad UM was able to make a competitive game against a solid SEC team. Lookin' for a bright future and regaining B10 dominence (applies to both OSU and UM).

They all know the rules and of the 115 of them only 3 didn't think the rules were not for them. The team will survive and prosper in the future.

Agreed, Weasle. Although those will be a couple of big holes to fill in the bowl game.
Hopefully, current and future players at UM will get the message that Hoke is serious, and will stop messing around, putting The Team first!

Here's to hoping Gardner plays QB on Sat. and DR is used as he should to maximize his talent - RB.

Shocking how badly Bellomy played in relief of DR... D was solid and held as long as it could.

I have to wonder why Gardner did play at QB when it was apparent that Bellomy wasn't up to the challenge. Guess it has been too long since he took any snaps at the position?

Denard Robinson could be used more on kick returns for Michigan

Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson isn't having his best season. That doesn't mean he's any less fast and elusive than ever. Coach Brady Hoke is considering utilizing Robinson's assets on kick returns.

I think Michigan is probably the most likely to win the Legends, at this point.
Nebraska's vaunted defense is a mess.
Sparty's offense doesn't show up most of the time.
NW is a poser. Their 5-0 start was all vs. bad teams with no more than two wins (BC loses to Army yesterday? Ouch!). And the first decent team they play, they collapse.
Minnesota looked good until Marquise went down. They'll probably wind up near the middle without him.
And who knows what's going on with Iowa? They're a disaster right now.
I thought Purdue was going to be a close game yesterday, but Michigan showed up to play, no doubt. If we can keep that type of play, and that mindset each week, I can see the only real challenges being Nebraska and osu. Right now, we're in the driver's seat in the Legends.
Before the season, I picked Michigan and Purdue in the B1G Championship. I'm still sticking with that.

The Conference is definitely down. UM can certainly win it as long as Denard doesn't have to throw it too often...

Does anyone think that Michigan can win their division? I think that the BIG 10er 11 er 12 or what ever we are now is wide open this year. The conference is soooooo bad!

ND is overrated, they have offense issues just like UM/MSU and their secondary will be exposed by a team that has an actual passing QB (unlike UM and apparently MSU). Their defensive front 7 are solid.

ND didn't win as much as UM lost that one. The first half was ugly for both squads... I was reminded of the '08 game against ND where UM lost by fumbling on Special Teams twice on their own Goal Line; another ugly game by both teams.

Finally watched the Air Force game. Michigan has no running game--Denard has to carry that part of the game.

It was one thing to look bad defensivley against Alabama, and quite another to look so porous against the Air Force. I have expected more from a much improved defense from last year, but the improvement does not seem to have yet appeared.(81st in total defense)

A patsy game this week before we see if we can beat a competent Notre Dame team.

Still hoping for 8-4 at the worst.

Go Blue!!

The defense got no help fom Denard and Co. (who has shown against quality teams he is not a good QB). He is a great kid and a tremendous athlete but I am looking forward to the day when Hoke gets to implement his Pro-style offense...

And yes, 'Bama does seem to have reloaded nicely.

Certainly not yet a good team. Will just monitor them the rest of the year to see if they can go 8-4. I certainly expected more from their defense, but they still aren't very good. While I thought the return to prominence could happen this year, it now looks like we are two seasons removed from that.
