Interstates between sites, and back roads otherwise.

I have traveled both interstate and country roads. It's lots of fun to see the country roads and that's what I do when the interstate gets in high traffic or I just want a break from the busy life style. Oh did you see the fancy yard decorations, old wagons, sculptures, or fancy crafts. I love to see the lines of clothing out doors on a summers day.

Yes. Do both. The back roads to meet people and see things, and the interstates to get to the next back road and new things.

For the ones that like to traverse the back roads and old US-Highways of America this site may spark your interest. I shun the Interstate highways as much as possible.

C.S.;I learned to hate Freeways because I live very close to one & am bored to tears on it.Local roads show us how these countries grew before we raped them for speed & convenience.

If I had more time, I'd take back roads because they're more scenic. But stoplights in urban areas, and the 2-lane portions (especially east of the Mississippi) really slow you down, not to mention dealing with slow drivers in front of you and aggressive drivers behind you.
So far, I've traced all of I-80, I-70 and U.S. 50. I hope so see all of old U.S. 66 soon. So far, I've only driven it from Chicago to St. Louis and Barstow to Kingman.

If generally travel by Interstate. I enjoy driving on no-interstates, but time is usually more important then enjoying the scenery. Eight hours is long enough on the road without adding a few more so I can enjoy the scenery.

_SES -- You are in one of the best areas of the country to travel the back roads, highways and by-ways. We lived in Gahanna for 7 years and never a weekend passed that we did not take a day/road trip trip somewhere. One of our favorites was exploring the old canal system through the state.... After a while you get the nack of knowing where they once ran. It got to be a game following them as close as possible thru the country side. There is much history in what was once known as the "Northwest Territory". One year when we started our vacation to the west we followed the old "National Road" for a way thru IN, IL and MO. We found following it east a little more interesting.

I've taken a trip down Route 66, and it was like a flash from my past. I've always wanted to travel Route 40 from end to end.... maybe one day.

Well, if you got the time, the backroads are infinitely more rewarding. But if you have a destination and a schedule, it don't work too well.

I prefer the interstate highways, because I know I won't get lost by driving on those roads.

As the late Charles Kuralt once said:

"Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything."

Most of mine are usually interstate travel. I don't mind it much because I like to visit the major cities and can get farther faster if I travel on the I-system.

Well, for us it depends on the purpose of the trip, we like both ways and try to incorporate a little of both in our roadtrips when possible, but if we are in a time crunch it's usually fastest to stick with the interstates.

Oh, it's ridiculous some of the things they ask for. They have heard NO more than anything else! I love them with all my heart, but, there is a lot their going to have to do on their own if they want it!
Got to have some for my wife & I when we FINALLY get to travel the way I want to.
I have a 17 yr. old and a (OH, NO!) 21 yr. old. I never had a third of the things that they have. They have no idea what it was like to get up on a balmy summer St. Louis morning, go out and play ALL DAY and not get home until dinner time. And that was only because Dad insisted on it. After that, it was back out to play until 11pm or midnight.
The memories I have of my youth in the summer! We never had cell phones, computers and all the other things that are around today! But, we had just as good of a time, if not better!
Thanks for the memories!

....you also want to be broke! Its more like we are spending the kids inheritance.
I do cheat sometimes and use the Interstate to get in, around or thru a big city or built up area...

Interstates are good for one thing, going through a city like Detroit. It can be down right scary for someone from outstate to be on SR-3 (Gratiot), SR-53 (Van Dyke), SR-1 (Woodward), SR-5 (Grand River), or SR-102 (Eight Mile) even in the daytime, much less at night.

Back roads, dirt roads, old US highways, state routes, anything but the interstate.

I detest highways. I have an idea of where I need to go and start heading in that direction. The fun in driving is not knowing exactly where you are going sometimes. Maps are there incase you get lost.

Rather than using the usual boring interstates on trip up north to Denver, we cut straight through the Rockies this summer. Wow! What an impressive drive! We'll be doing more of this in the future.

You may want to place the travel related posts on the US Travel Forum.
Look under Additional Forums, clk Travel, then clk US Travel.
By doing this you will most likely get a better response and it wont clog up this one.

We prefer the backroads, too. There is usually an interstate close enough to get to if you really need to make good time, but the backroads are certainly more interesting. Someone said the interstate system has allowed us to travel from coast to coast and see absolutely nothing.
