When winds are more than 30 mph across, they will escort all truck traffic. Over 45 mph and they will shut the bridge to all truck traffic. Over 60 mph and they will secure the bridge to all traffic.

I'm here and it has been years since I have been up there. One task on my "to do" list

When/under what weather conditions do they shut down The Bridge to the UP?
When I was a student at tOSU, I stayed at Cedar Campus just east of the bridge....I swam across the straights to get there, if you were wondering? It took me a year to thaw out, though!!
Seriously, the pristine beauty...having to dog paddle in the inlet for a terribly long time before we could use their boats/canoes...just whetted my appetite to follow my 'dream' of being a Ranger Naturalist some day. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship sponsored the retreat...but my experiences up there on the edge of the UP left lasting impressions from the Mid-1960's. BTW, my daughter's name is Maranatha; she was born in White Fish, Montana hospital...while I was leading a hike up to Avalanche Lake in Glacier National Park. Only she is allowed to tell her age, though! ;) I go by "Ranger Tom" or "BuckeyeAggie" sometimes. I have an ongoing thread of my travels over the years> Ranger Tom's Parks Blog = God's Great Outdoors

We visited Sault Ste Marie, Tahquamenon Falls, and Mackinac Island last week. BEAUTIFUL, and the cooler temperatures were heavenly!

I have been to Paradise and Whitefish point several times, in both winter and summer. The Tahquamenon Falls area is beautiful. Newberry area was also nice. Always a thrill to cross that big bridge, no matter how many times I do it. Hope to get a bit further west next time we go, maybe next spring or summer.

As a native Michigander, we used to go to the "Soo" alot to see the ships go through the locks. And stopping off for a side trip to Mackinac Island doesn't hurt either.

Am going to the Sault Ste Marie next week like to watch the boats go thru the locks, One year there was so much fog they would not let boats go thru, when we got there was 12 boats waiting, that alone was worth the trip.

We wnt to Sault Ste Marie and took a boat through the Soo locks. The ride took us into Lake Superior and back down on the Canadian side into Lake Huron. After the ride we stopped at the locks and watehed some freighters go through the locks. Really something to see. Also went out to Mackinaw Island. No motor vehicles are allowed on the island. Walk, bike or horse back. Really quite impressive. Were planning to take the Toonerville trolly, but time ran out. Will have to do that next time we visit.

I wonder if people know what U.P. stands for?
I've never been to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
