Trying to go to New York, but am reconsidering because of the price for a hotel room. Could we get some suggestions for a hotel that isn't down town or in the theatre district.

Well, if you're going alone, try a hostel. I can get a bed in a dorm-style room in midtown (45th St. between 6th and 7th Avenues) for $37 a night including all taxes. You cannot beat the location. If you don't mind staying somewhere besides midtown, some places are even lower. But I consider the luxury of being right in the middle of everything worth the extra $5 or $10 a night. The downside? You sleep in a bunk bed, there's absolutely no extra space and very limited privacy. European bathrooms (one or two per floor). A good place to look up hostels is here.
