I am noticing now that more and more jobs are asking for more education than just grade 12. Is this the way for the graduates of grade 12 are being pushed into more and more education? What ever happened to just being able to have a grade 12 graduate diploma and being able to get a decent job?

I think its ridiculous how people are being forced into more education, more debt in order to get even a low paying entry level job. It's sad and scary

High school isn't enough anymore. At least a 2-yr associates degree seems to be needed for entry level jobs besides fast-food places.

I think you need college or a trade. High school diploma doesn't cut it anymore.

I was speaking with a "service representative" at WallyWorld yesterday. She is an independant contractor for a company that sells posters, and her job is to stock and arrange the display at several stores in her area. She says the company requires a degree in business to get the job.

Seems like overkill to me ...

I don't think high school is enough simply because the school don't teach you enough. There's a lot to be learned in and out of the classroom after high school.

College just isn't enough these days. I was lucky to find a job, which has given me opportunities to learn and grow within the company, but that was 14 years ago. I don't think a high school diploma will even get you in for an interview.
How much college will you need? That too is a risky question. I have see people with PHD's struggling. Seems you need to be diverse in everything to find something now a days.

No, because a HS education is not what it used to be. Nor is a college degree.
Degrees are mostly a screening device for the HR dept.

When I graduated from college only the educational facilities were interested in my grades. The HR Directors commented on my salary increases with each new position.

HS grads think they know everything. College grads know they will never know everything even within their own field of learning.

200 years ago only grade school was required. The it was high school.
Later it became college. Now a doctorate might not be enough. Is there
anything higher? At what price?

~~Will being a High School graduate be enough?~~

If you get breaks in life...yes..if not the rest of the schooling can really be missed...specially in these trying times.

The wife and I, 50's babies did it with HS Only, and did very well, I just dont endorse it in this day and age !!!

I don't think educators are amiss that we need more trade students. I think society is. We need a lot more trade professionals but kids aren't pushed in that direction. And society doesn't glorify trades so they aren't "desirable". But we need many many more to enter the trades.

The one arena where Educators are remiss is in the area of a Trade. There is still a need for Carpenters, Bricklayers, Plumbers, Electricians and a myriad of other professions that will still be needed. Unfortunately, Educators only know one way, their way, but there have been many that are successful without that sheepskin. If a person is inclined in the direction of education, that is great but it isn't the only way.
I believe that higher education is not for everyone, they can still be successful and a great use to Society.

Most of the job descriptions I am seeing today asks if you have a master degree. It's hard enough in this job market for college graduates to find a job with their bachelor degree, but now a master as well?!?

I'm not sure which college gave out credits for remedial English (grammar), Math, and writing, but it is sad if they did.

With the economy in the pits, and jobs rare as the pot of gold at the base of a rainbow, fast food stores are now requiring either a high school diploma, or grades that are above average. They can be picky now as they are trying to bring in a higher caliber worker.

I think it will be a starting point, but not sufficient in most cases, as it has been in the past.

These days education is lacking in most of the U.S. We need to put emphasis on this. We need to beat other countries in this area.

Political bloviation happened. Every long-winded, election-seeking, junketing-craving politico wants to "help the chuuul-dren."

"Every kid should get a college education," is the new mantra, even if he or she wants to be a mechanic or plumber or carpenter.

Not in these times. Back in the 40's and 50's, kids learned a lot more than they do today. Their education was more meaningful. Today, it's all dumbed-down.

Freshmen at college get credit for remedial English (grammar), Math, and writing. Very sad.

The general knowledge of mankind double approximately every 18 months. This isn't 1950 and just being able to do the 3 "R's" just isn't enough any more.

No way. World now supplies Uni. graduate students for the work force. You now compete with graduates from India, China etc.

No. The world has become more technically advanced and with it, the need to be better educated. The competition for jobs will most often be won by those with the higher level of education.

When I was a younger man, those who did not do well in high school could become auto mechanics, enter the trades or join the military. That was then, but that is not today's world. The demands for technical expertise, in all those fields, have tilted the field in favor to those who have the skills and knowledge to compete.

Not everyone will be as successful is Bill Gates without going to college. As I review applications, if it has no college I disregard it. There are too many applicants who try to go to college. Not everyone I hire has a college degree. But they all attend some college.

High school may be enough but, in today's society it probably will not let one get an opportunity. I look at Bill Gates and he does fairly well. If he didn't create something himself he probably would not have gotten an opportunity to prove himself.

Some college graduates don't know much more than they did when they graduated from high school. So requiring college courses may not be enough to guarantee employers get qualified people.

Expect disappointment. A Chief Information Security Officer (which would require at least a B.S. or M.S. Degree) has an average salary of $125,000. Those above the 90th percentile make over $220,000.
An Associates in IT doesn't get people very far in a good sized corporation - those are the ones that pay well.

That is a GREAT place to start! Get that degree, but do not stop there. Keep going even if it is one class at a time. And get a foot in the door at a place that will help pay for tuition.

I believe that the better educated you are the more freedom and ability you have to pursue the job that you love. The job market is very tough at the moment--not sure we can make sweeping generalizations.

A high school diploma is NEVER enough!! Typically, the only jobs you can attain with only a high school diploma are labor intensive jobs......like construction, garbageman, servers, etc. Don't get me wrong, some of these jobs pay well. But it's only cause you put your body through so much wear and tear that you doing that particular type of work for 20 or 30 years is highly unlikely. Higher education is always the way!

Being a trades person I feel a Grade 12 is enough. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, there is opportunity out there. I am an Electrician and have a Full time job and run my own company (just me). I could work 24/7 if I wanted. I know my son (grade 10 right now) doesn't want to go past grade 12 and I personally don't have a problem with that because there is becoming a shortage of trades people right now. I make 100k plus with my fulltime job then add in my own company and I am doing just fine with my grade 12 + trades education.

We need to have more tech programs and real world training, Sorry but History as much as I like it will bore some people to tears. Fixing machines for some is the adrenaline that will keep them learning or building or assembling etc. Germany has programs like this. America is too slow to change and that is WHY we have a 25 or more % Drop out rate. People need to learn what interests them as much as History or English literature. Some people just do not like those topics.

The difference between being ignorant and stupid is. Being taught and not making the same mistake twice.

English literature will not keep the lights on but Electrical training will. My auto Mechanic does not need to know when WW2 was, although it is nice if they have that interest also.

It would be nice if people learned about driving laws, and financial planning and insurance and retirement, Real life stuff. What adults will need to function in our society, Algebra, although pretty on a report card will not get you a better insurance policy or pay that credit card bill, or explain why to get an oil change for your car. We live in a Complex world with very little training on how to navigate it...

When future kids will be competing with new arrivals as well as Asians who value ongong post graduate education, Grd 12 is similiar to grd 8 in value of a few years gone by.IMHO

Most students are not ready for life after they graduate from high school. High schools do not prepare them well to have a decent job right after graduation.

As a former teacher it scares me how much our children do not know as they graduate high school. Two more years in the JC system might help but children today will definitely benefit from military experience. Draft should be instituted.

Schooling seems to be less effective as time goes by. My father who had only an eight grade education (in most places at that time it was all that was available) could do math in his head I had problems with in writing after I graduated from high school 55 years ago. My children and their friends with four years of college have no grasp oh how to do a lot of simple every day problems that are just common sense. Seems as though in a few years the average problem solver will be just finishing their education in their early 30's. Is it something about desire and responsibility that is lacking or not being taught?
