People who "sleep in a box" are not necessarily slaggards --
Recently, I made a trip to Austin, TX. Was in town for 10 days. Project had me moving fairly early each morning, but at the corner I had to turn was "manned" by a young lady, pan-handling. She looked fairly clean, but always carried the same beat-up sign. Going back to my hotel each evening, I could look across the intersection, and see that she was still "on-duty" eleven hours later.
Don't know how much she was making, but at least she was diligent at her "job"

I blame the parents (you) for allowing it to happen.

10-12 hours of sleep a night is needed for kids. Parents, do your job and get them there at home.

Kids that sleep in school aren't getting enough sleep at home. I know homework can add up quickly but trying your hardest to stick to a sched and get regular sleep is so important to success in school!

Horrible idea. "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." Take the advice of the talented Benjamin Franklin. Successful people rise early because if you snooze, you lose. These quotes/proverbs aren't just b.s.; they hold a high certainty of truth. Bill Gates has 24 hrs in a day, and the hobo down the street has 24 hrs in a day. Obviously Bill Gates made more out of his time because he wasn't sleeping in a box for 16 hrs a day and standing in front of a freeway exit for 8 hrs.

I was a high school math teacher. I would wake the sleepers and tell them I had an agreement with Holiday Inn: If they wouldn't teach math in their rooms, I wouldn't let kids sleep in my room.

It gives teachers a later start time. Pretty sad for England.

Sleeping in schools is counter-productive to my way of thinking. I'm sure my boss would not want me snoring away on my desk. Sleep at home on your own time

10 am is too late! Children should start school by 7-8 am... it instills a good habit.

Yes, let's let them know that the world will accomodate them. That competitors for the jobs will make allowances to enable them to survive.

Depends on whether you want to keep the current hours because it is most convenient for parents and the schools - or listen to healthcare researchers. Unfortunately the climate right now is not very favorable to considering what's best for the kids vs what's always been done. The next time I hear some variation of "well, it was good enough for us" I will start screaming.

Keeping kids engaged in class will keep them from sleeping. Letting the kids sleep in an extra hour is a bad idea because it is teaching them bad habits.

When I was a kid, Mom and I (I don't ever remember Pop discussing the subject) came to the conclusion I should get to bed by 9:00. I remember we tried later to-bed times but I was soon insisting that we go back to 9:00.
Now, I basically don't go to sleep without sleeping pills. At least twice, I stayed up all night to get up and do something early in the morning. (One time, it was catch a plane. I didn't go to sleep on the plane but I was very groggy.)
