Gas drilling job-training programs pop up in NY

By MARY ESCH - Associated Press -- BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Rick Allen moved to upstate New York to escape the rat race and tension of Washington, D.C., but when he arrived in his hometown, the 49-year-old electronics technician couldn't find a job.

"I happened to walk into the workforce center and saw a sign on the wall for natural gas training," Allen said. "I never knew anything about natural gas." With encouragement from his daughter and a job counselor, he signed up for the 72-hour course at Corning Community College to augment his computer repair experience with knowledge of natural gas drilling.

Within days of graduating, he landed a job as a computer technician for Superior Well Services in Owego, 65 miles south of Syracuse near the Pennsylvania border.

"The Lord has blessed me with a good situation here," said Allen.

hopefully 72 hours of course work will be enough to make these people less dangerous and prevent catastrophic injuries.

This is good news.
For people who listen to politicians talk about job creation, note that, more often than not, jobs are found by those who are looking for them. This means walking into a workforce centre (or similar), actively looking for work, and being open to re-training and education.
Scapegoating and complaining on the GasBuddy forums will probably not result in a new job or career advancement.

Good for him! Just got a letter from Nextenergy of Denver Colorado wanting to lease my land in Illinois for oil and gas drilling. Are they a trustworthy firm?

Agredd unemployment would go down. Training programs in all areas of oil drilling and the oil business need to be implemented in all states.

If training was a condition to collect a unemployment check, you would see the unemployment rate go down.

Good News! I hope that the decline in natural gas does not make his job short lived. I think it's a shame that we have an abundance of natural gas, yet nobody seems to want to utilize it to it's maximum potential.
