U.S. 'dirty oil' imports set to triple

CNN -- NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- U.S. imports of what environmentalists are calling "dirty oil" are set to triple over the next decade, raising concerns over the environmental impact of extracting it and whether pipelines can safely transport this Canadian oil.

The United States currently imports over half a million barrels a day of bitumen from Canada's oil sands region, according to the Sierra Club. By 2020, that number is set to grow to over 1.5 million barrels -- or nearly 10% of the country's current consumption.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration's overall Canadian oil production numbers are in-line with the Sierra Club's projected pace.

Bitumen is a heavy, tar-like oil. It needs to be heavily processed in order to be turned into lighter, easier to refine, crude oil. Because bitumen

bitumen based oil products will eventually dry up as the vast tar sand pits are eventually too deep to dig.

Some common sense reported in this article:
"More importantly, the industry says the pipeline companies would not agree to carry this stuff if it really was destroying their systems.

"No pipeline operator would want to spend billions of dollars to transport something their pipeline can't handle," said Andy Black, president of the U.S.-based Association of Oil Pipe Lines.

Plus, he said refineries, which are basically a massive twist of steel pipes, would not want this stuff if it really was more corrosive."

I want to protect the environment when it is warranted, but the "greenies" are out of control.

Yes, trust the far left lobby advocates like Suzuki, Green Peace, Tyee, Gore, Castro etc. etc. Those who regularly prostrate themselves to drive their proven unscientific ideology - for the sake of the earth. No! For the sake of their wallets and an completely out of touch ideology. Many of whom are funded by the same source! It isn't a multiple of individual concerns being raised, but rather one voice being parroted by band waggoners taking what they hear from their sources as the gospel truth. Yes, many who have never taken the time to put all the facts together and ponder/research those results and let some common sense govern their conclussions. Rather, trust the personal agendas of a fruit fly scientist (who – it has been reported, has been caught regularily embellishing the truth and admitted to it) or an organization who "rejects" good science in favour of their own agenda according to one of the co-founders of Green Peace who left them and now speaks out against them on behalf of the oil sands. Interestingly enough, he was the only real scientist with a true formal scientific background of the subject matter on the board of directors. Yes, bad mouth him for being honest and subject knowledgable and not those climate change zealots(not climatologists) – again, with no formal education who predicted total doom and gloom – Gore comes to mind. Oh, btw way, many of those key players are now saying they were wrong and went way over board with their predictions (chemist James Lovelock). And others who have admitted to even willingly falsifing reports and collected data to perpetuate their ideological agenda. Why? Because the lies caught up to them and the truth will always will out. Yes, lets all rush out and buy fuel from those whose "sole" mission is to destroy us and our way of life. Yes, buy from OPEC, and fund terrorism and dictator despots who deny their people human rights by buying their “conflict oil.” From reports I’ve read/heard the oil sands crude is no worse than Californian crude or Venezuelan crude. Why buy from a “trusted” source, an ally? One who leads the oil industry in transparency by reporting honest, provable facts and “clean earth” policies. When have you seen this from OPEC countries...NEVER! A country who believes in personal freedoms and equality for all - much like the US. Yes, lets be like China and all wear masks and who walks all over human rights and freedoms or the middle east who treat women lower than dogs.. Oh yes, and who wants to not only destroy our way of life, but us as well. Another well thought out plan by the extreme left...again! NOT!

As for Canada refining it themselves, good idea. Wish we did – because the real money/jobs is in the refining processes not so much the raw product. As is the case with many industries.

harleydoctor - I'm tired of seeing my hard earned dollars going into the hands of foreign nations and billionaires. If your life is easier to take when you can blame Obama for all your troubles then so be it. Neither party is going to stem the flow of wealth from the working class to the ultra-rich. If you believe otherwise you're just kidding yourself.

Normally when one speaks of Bitumen, one is looking at a coal derivative. This substance has to have the consistency of caramel.

For those not familiar with "bitumen":

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitumen

Petroleum is considered "sweet" if it contains less than 0.5% sulfur.

rumbleseat said: "if the US doesn't want it, China does, and since they already built upgraded refineries to handle Venezuelan crude, they have no problem figuring out the refining of oil sands crude. The stall on the Keystone pipeline spurred exploration of other markets for our oil."

Yep, in the greenie zeal to block the pipeline, Obozo essentially killed the potential for jobs here in the U.S. and transferred them overseas. And people wonder why the recovery is so sluggish!? This kind of job-killing mentality does absolutely nothing but export opportunities to other countries.

As I said before, we should be drilling more for oil here at home, especially ON LAND rather than offshore, and to move forward with ALL alternatives.

CNN and their ilk will always refer to it as dirty oil. Of course they think all oil is dirty, so given any chance, they will refer to it as such.

We need to let the Canadians deal with the environmental issues associated with the oil extraction. We cannot dictate policy to all the other countries in the world.

This is just another excuse to justify importing oil from OPEC, which I guess is "clean oil'. If the oil companies exported less oil products overseas, and kept it here for OUR use, we wouldn't NEED to import oil.
