Mexico is too busy spending money on pamphlets telling their citizens how to sneak into the US to be bothered helping out GM.

Let Canada spend their money on GM. Mexico was smart being absent from anything to do with GM.

GM Mexico has consistently beaten the U.S. in quality ever since 1990 when I visited Ramos Arizpe Assembly Plant. Take a not so modern plant, train local workforce, keep things simple by not automating just for technologies sake, and voila...consistently the leader in quality production. Hats off to all the hard-working and very intelligent Mexican workforce. Now why would they even want to invest in GM's U.S. auto industry? there's no reason to...from their perspective. Just my thoughts...

Well, with the good old "Cap and Trade (Tax)" initiative, more and more corporate ventures will move north and south out of the USA. It just doesn't make sense to pay more when you can get more for less elsewhere. Too bad the HO administration is too naive to "get it".

It's not about Mexican government spending to save GM, it's about cutting taxes so the business can thrive without this huge penalty.

Since we - the American public - won't buy the crappy cars from GM and Chrysler, the government will take our tax money and give it to them, instead and reward them for the terrible job they are doing.
If you want to buy American, buy Ford, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan cars. They all produce cars in the US. All you have to do is check if the first digit of the VIN is the number 1 - that means the car or truck was made in the US. Don't buy GM or Chrysler and reward them for stealing our money when they could not earn it by building decent cars at a decent price.

They are profitable because "GM ... managed to keep the cost of production south of the California and Texas borders at Third World levels, thanks largely to Mexico's weak unions" Go figure. Interesting that TIME would choose to use the adjectives 'Third World' and 'weak' to describe these unions that actually allow their companies to make money. But then, consider the source.
