Link is dead. I looked it up on Wikipedia

Gasification

It looks a bit involved for the average garage tinkerer and far from clean.

Tried to read the article and got a blank page. Seems if they are using wood there would be even more smoke or smog than using gas.

The article link went to a blank page requiring log in. I presume this has to do with the man and son that used a pickup running wood etc. and made a long distance trek across part of US. Great experiment, just not practical at this time. Perhaps it would be useful in a home situation.

There's a lot of people outside of gasbuddy and automotive lines that know about this and it's nothing new either, just like they say it's been done since the 1800's.

In the eighties, I met a man driving cross country in a pick-up truck that ran on used vegetable oil he collected from fast food stores.

He would enter a store, order a meal, pay, then while eating, he would extol the virtues of "free fuel". once done eating, he would ask to speak to the manager, and request their used cooking oil.

The back of his truck could process used oil as well as vegetablew scraps(used lettuce, etc.) and convert it into fuel for his deisel engine.

He started on the west coast and was heading for the tip of Long Island, the following day.

Most states refuse to allow the equipment to do this conversion, for one reason or another. At the same time, we are extolled to find other ways to conserve energy.

Obviously, unless the conservation effort generates consistent tax revenues, it is not good for us.

Go figger.

How often do you need to stop & stoke the fire, or buy another cord of wood?

cincindie;
1- I thank you very much for the clue to reading the whole story.
2- Looks like that newspaper found a way to gouge money. oilbarons (lack of a capitol letter indicates my opinion of them) eat your heart!
3- I wish I had the 'smarts' and the ambition to equal E. Brown`s.
