Deepwater Oil Drilling Picks Up Again as BP Disaster Fades

NY Times -- HOUSTON — Nearly two years after an explosion on an oil platform killed 11 workers and sent millions of gallons of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, deepwater drilling has regained momentum in the gulf and is spreading around the world.
After a yearlong drilling moratorium, BP and other oil companies are intensifying their exploration and production in the gulf, which will soon surpass the levels attained before the accident. Drilling in the area is about to be expanded into Mexican and Cuban waters, beyond most American controls, even though any accident would almost inevitably affect the United States shoreline. Oil companies are also moving into new areas off the coast of East Africa and the eastern Mediterranean.

TustinDad, so your only defense of Obama is an attack on oil production during the Bush years, when Clinton was responsible for what happened from 1997 to 2004 (his term was 3 years earlier)? You cannot blame Bush to defend Obama on this subject when Bush deserves the credit for the increased production today.

The early years of the Bush administration were characterized by many outrageous things, but low supply of oil was not one of them. The prices were very volatile during those years, and it wasn't because of supply problems. During some of that period, we had an oversupply. I'm sure you don't recall (or won't admit), but even here in the Los Angeles area after Sept 2001, the price got below a dollar per gallon. I paid 89 cents per gallon here in December that year. Other times it skyrocketed due to the war or threat of war in Iraq (for example). The important point is that he increased the number of leases and permits which have helped get our increased production today over the past 3+ years.

In any case, Obama has done nothing but obstruct domestic production of oil. He claims in public statements that drilling won't bring down the price of fuel, yet his regime is pushing the Saudis to drill more to bring down the price of fuel.

You did not see the years. If it takes three years then Bush didn't start to issue an increased number of permits until 2005. What took him so long?

A perfect plan for those who believe "I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody."

Cuba, Mexico, and China get all the benefit, and we have to clean up the mess if there is a spill.

The drilling should only been stopped long enough to inspect the operations and then resumed in quick order.

TustinDad: "If it takes 3 years, the Bush's first term must have been a disaster for the US oil production since it was in a steady decline from 1997 through 2008."

Unfortunately we were stuck with Clinton from 1993 to 2001, so that would explain the lack of oil production.

But the basic argument remains true, that Obama had nothing to do with any increase in oil production. In fact it would have been higher if he had not obstructed production and imposed an ILLEGAL moratorium on drilling in the Gulf.

heysailor: "I guess the rednecks and FOXNews won't give Obama any credit for this. Under his leadership, domestic oil output is at an eight year high and we have more oil rigs deployed than the rest of the world put together."

You really don't know much about current events or about oil production.

TustinDad, you need to pay attention to this also.

How about Obama's illegal 6-month moratorium on deep water drilling in the Gulf along with his de facto moratorium on new shallow water drilling? Obama's holdup of drilling permits was so slow after he lifted his illegal moratorium that even his comrade Bill Clinton called Obama's holdup of permits as "ridiculous."

It takes about 3 years to get oil production going after the issue of drilling leases and permits. We know that Obama has issued very few new permits since taking office. Obama has been in office barely over 3 years. Even if you were to lie and credit Obama with increasing domestic production of oil, none of that production could be credited to Obama since he has not been in office long enough.

The credit for the increased production clearly goes to Bush, who increased the number of drilling leases and permits before he left office. That is why the price of gasoline plunged from $4.12 to a low of $1.61 before climbing back up after Obama's election to $1.79 when he took office.

It can also be noted that the increased production on private land such as in North Dakota has contributed to the current higher production numbers. Again, Obama had nothing to do with that production.

Why aren't people lining up to sue the Japanese for trashing the Pacific Ocean? They are responsible for tons of debris that, unlike the crude oil released in the Gulf, isn't going away.
