Gas prices, inflation under the microscope: Impact on consumers likely was muted in March

Wall Street Journal -- One of the biggest threats to the U.S. economy is higher gas prices, but so far the cost of filling up has not slowed the recovery.

After spiking in the first few months of 2012, gas prices have leveled off at a national average just under $4 a gallon. If the price holds steady or declines, economists say, a threat to the economy will likely be averted.

The effects of gas prices on U.S. households will come into focus with this week’s reports on inflation and consumer sentiment.

The data is expected to show inflation tapering off and consumers still somewhat optimistic despite higher gas prices and last week’s disappointing U.S. jobs report.

We always have to look at who is talking when they press their data, and what they are implying and at whose behest.Where we live the economy is not better. Maybe it's better for the guys being paid to write this stuff. Recently Bernanke indicated little faith in the newest jobs report. So what about that tell me he doesn't count for anything except interest rates and QE. How can a poor family guy pay $100.00 per wk extra for his gas and be optimistic? Does anybody think we are being a little misled on behalf of someone?

it's all a political game right now for votes.that's why fuel prices dropped by 33 cents this week. if they P.O. the voters who celebrate easter they would lose all their backing from the people who still know what it means. : )plus the stores would not have sold any goods for the holi(Y)day. : ) causing their profits shares to dip sharply for this month. :) which is hilarious over the last ten years they tried to get rid of christ-mas and easter any holi-day that has to do with christianity.ooops. now the money changers are willing to do business with anyone. hahahahahaha :0 what a world what a world.....it's to funny.

There is no recovery, it has slowed everything. Try telling this to a business owner. Their side of the story will be contrastly different.

Speculators add greatly to the price of gasoline, but add absolutely no value to it. Speculation should be abolished.

It is nice to have a somewhat optimistic report instead of those tiresome stories about how gas is heading for $5/gal. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.

Wall Street Journal appears to be optimistic. Gas/ diesel prices tend to preceed what happens to food and shipping costs. Fuel is high now, food and shipping soon to follow. As those prices climb the economy goes down.

What is this, are these economists and the author of this article insane?

Agree with "hemiMI"
I've heard the same from the mad money guy, he said with unemployment was lower so gas prices become easier to pay when higher, in so many words, I don't agree with that, how could it not effect any economic recovery, the higher gas prices get, the less money we have for other things we need for our families.

i'd like for the wall street fat cats to tell me where there is a recovery..

the threat to my economy was reached when gas hit $2/gallon, and unemployment stayed over 10% in north carolina..

these so called economists need to get out in the real world..
