It May Be Diesel's Turn to Shine As Americans Yawn at Hybrids

Forbes -- American consumers are boosting their interest in — and loyalty to — clean-diesel engines at the same time they’re demonstrating more and more indifference to hybrids.

“Repurchase loyalty” for diesel powertrains increased by nearly 10 percentage points last year compared with 2008 while consumer repurchase rates for hybrid technology remained about flat at 35 percent, according to new data compiled by R.L. Polk. Diesel’s jump in repurchase loyalty as measured by Polk hasn’t been reported, while news about hybrid-repurchase trends was widespread yesterday.

Diesel-repurchase loyalty was up by about 9 percentage points over the three years, to 28 percent last year from 19 percent in 2008, reported the Southfield, Mich.-based auto-research firm.

What Americans want is to get the huge improvements in fuel economy without having to pay for them.

So if you can make it look, act, and cost exactly like the competing gasoline powered cars and truck, then you will be able to sell as many as you can make.

But the status quo in alternate fuels and super economical cars and trucks are not what's going to sell in the USA in large numbers.

So, figure out how to bring down the cost of diesel cars and trucks, as well as diesel fuel, and diesel has a chance to be the big game changer in the USA.

Hybrids are too expensive. Prius has the only efficient hybrid on the market. Diesel fuel should be priced lower than gasoline given it doesn't require the higher refining of gasoline. The diesel makers have to come out with a vehicle in this country that can equal the mpg of the vehicles sold in Europe.

bobcatfan: Diesel is roughly 10% more per gallon than reg gasoline. The engine is roughly 30% more efficient. Cost per mile is 20% less. Depending on how many miles one puts on a vehicle in a year, it can pay itself off in a reasonable period of time. Also, consider that resale value of most diesel powered vehicles is higher.

Hah! Yes, diesels are clean these days. I have 60,000 miles on mine and the inside of my exhaust tips have no soot residue whatsoever. Now go ahead and look at the exhaust pipe on a Prius. :P

As for idling any engine in an enclosed environment... Yeah, stupid.

Diesel is a great source of energy. Clean diesel more than ever. However, diesel in my area has been running 15 to 50 cents per gallon higher than regular gasoline. Even with higher MPG's it seems hard to recover the added expense of the engine and fuel.

I have a VW Jetta TDI with a DPF and I've never heard of them getting clogged up. This is perhaps a problem limited to a few diesels? Using oil that's not a low-ash generating oil will cause problems as well.

GB_direct1, If you park a hybrid in the garage, you won't have to worry about dead cats either. I don't care how clean you think diesels are, unless you live in the Arctic, idling an engine is just plain stupid.

nwsynthetics, how about designing better diesel engines that don't get clogged up? Your argument is the same one that engine manufacturers gave 35 years ago when leaded gas was banned. They wanted to ban catalytic converters because you couldn't use leaded gas with them. They said it gummed them up.

diesel - better fuel mileage than gasoline and cleaner too - dont believe its cleaner try this - park a gasoline powered car in a closed garage for an hour along with several cats and then try it with a diesel powered car for the same amount of time (oh yeah you will need new cats if you try the gas powered first)

USCCRN said, "Bio-diesel is a viable energy alternative. It's cleaner than regular diesel and could be made more abundant."

The question is, "Does biodiesel drive up food prices since foodcrops and biodiesel compete for the same farmland?"

I'd have more faith in biodiesel if the tractors and harvesters actually ran on the stuff and the fertilizer used to grow the stuff wasn't fossil fuel-based.

That being said, used fry grease is perfectly fine for biodiesel since it was already used in cooking and would be thrown away, anyway.

Just no way in the USA when diesel exceeds the price of premium gasoline!

The usual misinformation poll by Polk. Who paid/sponsored this one?

There is still no such animal as truly "clean" diesel. It is just cleaner than the old sulfur laden D. It still spews lots of unhealthy and dangerous to our lungs particulates. It is still bad news.

Solar and/or wind generation on every building in America makes more sense. Then all vehicles could be electric without adding to abundant pollution from coal.

don't really know the cost point that diesel is cheaper to operate in regular cars, because of the extra costs with maintance. for large trucks its hands down cheaper.

If its the stink, carry air freshners... Diesel prices shouldn't be where they are at. Diesel motors will last longer than a regular motor, diesels have come a long way. stop clogging them up with the greenie add ons.

They're trying to put some really nice lipstick on this pig. Note the loyalty numbers: 35% for hybrids, 28% for diesels. Not real good.

Driving a Diesel engine vehicle and getting better mileage is good. However the price per gallon is higher than premium gasoline. I am not sure how to calculate the break even point .... mileage vs price

Diesels have a lot going for them. Unfortunately, there is still the diesel stink and the 30 cent a gallon premium over regular (in this area), two giant negatives. Still cheaper than current biofuels, I suppose. NObama 2012.

Diesels are good. I have a 2008 diesel engine, and they run so much cleaner and quieter than the past engines. The cost of diesel has surpasted gas, but find that the diesel is more effcient.

Regardless of what type of fuel will be in the future, the gov't will still find a way to tax it and raise the price just like gas is now,
count on it.
