Diesel Cars Make a Comeback in the U.S.

Scientific American -- Gone are the days of riding in the family station wagon, inhaling smelly, sooty fumes from a noisy diesel engine.

Diesel engines have always been more efficient than their gasoline counterparts, but over the last decade, the autos and the fuel they run on have had to come a long way to shed their dirty image. Today, diesel cars offer Americans another fuel-efficient vehicle option that could also ease the pain at the pump.

"The great thing about diesel is that it's coming in at the right time," said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. "It's proven itself as a technology, and it has the credentials to compete with policymakers and customers that want to drive a car that's good for the environment and low in carbon dioxide emissions."

Diesel is a good option. I'd prefer natural gas.

diesels have come a long way, still can last for a long time if taken care of, way less smoke and good or excellent mileage...diesel price needs some work ...the fuel still is expensive...more biodiesel less e85

It will be good to have a better choice of modern diesel powered cars. Diesel should be cheaper than gasoline as it requires less processing than gasoline. It is unfortunate that Big Oil is sticking it to those that drive diesels (especially truckers as that causes prices increases of all goods).

“Why would diesel help ease the pain at the pump, it is quite a lot more expensive than gasoline here.”

Diesel engines are more efficient so you get more miles/gallon, more than making up for the higher cost of fuel. They are also more durable, lasting for many more miles than a comparable gasoline engine.

Having shed many of the negatives associated with diesel engines, the American
car buyers are now looking more positively at this type of engine.

This is looking like progress. Now, if we can just keep the Union's fingers out of the pie, We might get a quality product for our money.

premium grade gas ABOVE diesel prices, and in some locations, even midgrade is above diesel. Remember when diesel was TEN CENTS a gallon, and they could not give it away ?? (But now I date myself)
