Better to buy new?

Santa Rosa Press Democrat -- Save money and help save the planet — buy a new car.

What sounds like an automobile industry marketing mantra actually comes from the Natural Resources Defense Council, a 1.3-million member environmental organization known for zealously guarding the air, land, water and wildlife.

In a new report, “Relieving Pain at the Pump,” the council recommends as a remedy for $4 a gallon gasoline that consumers check out a “bumper crop of fuel-efficient cars” now in dealer showrooms.

“Drivers can start saving money immediately by trading in their gas guzzlers for today’s gas sippers,” the report says, noting there are 57 domestic and foreign models for 2012 that get better than 20 miles per gallon, including 15 at more than 30 mpg.

I've done very well buying last year's low mileage demos from dealers. Great cars and big savings.

This doesn't make sense, you should spend a lot of money to save a little on fuel? They must work for the government.

There's a lack of wisdom in that organization that professes to "protect" and then releases an ill thought out report. If they failed to think their report through to it's logical end, then might they be duped in their thinking about "protecting" anything?

Been there, done that! 2 1/2 years ago I bought a car that used 25% less gas.

Guess where the savings went? High insurance rates!

Yes, I did the world as well as my insurance company a favor.

its better to buy new but keep it for a while until you can get a way better car dont just keep trading in a car every 2 years just because something better came out. you will just cause your self to go into debt with all the trade-ins.

Mileage gains and new technology is coming so fast that you wonder if buying now is the answer. If I wait will it get even better? Maybe leasing is the way to go. Just turn it back in and get a newer, better mileage car every couple of years.

gas mileage is never the reason to buy a new car =, to replace a good car that you already own. even if it doubles mileage, it will take years to break even.

There is only one way to get people to spend money and thats really lower the gas prices so that the economy will pick up hire people so that they will have money to spend to buy what they want.

The math just doesn't add up. Payments, finance charges, Insurance, DMV fees and a warrantee. Oh and you still have to put gas in it or charge your batteries. Until the prices of EVERYTHING goes down the average working man can't afford it.......

Point made, but dumping a good vehicle and buying a new one is not necessarily the solution.

...most of those tiny cars are fuggly!!! Not to mention dangerous as hell if you live in a community where every fifth vehicle is a car. Too many SUVs/BIG trucks (3/4- to 1-ton) in my area and many of them drive like assholes anyway i.e. speed, tailgate, cut in front of you/cut you off, and many times they just do not see you...

With the economy the way it is and peoples financial outlooks not as well as the it should be, only a small percentage of the population can afford to buy a new, fuel efficient car.
