Alternative Fuel Stations Approach 10,000 in the U.S.

GasBuddy Blog -- A new report from the Energy Information Addministration (EIA) says that although gasoline remains, by far, the dominant transportation fuel, the use of alternative fuels currently in use is growing. But, the majority of that usage is by government and private fleets.

These fuels include: electricity, propane, higher ethanol-gasoline blends (E85), hydrogen and natural gas. Altogether there are now about 10,000 alternative fuel stations in the U.S. and about 160,000 gas stations nationwide.

The report notes, for instance, that bio-diesel fuels (which differ in the proportion of petroleum diesel and bio-based fuel) are used primarily in private and government fleets only, and of the 347 private access stations, nearly...

Do we really need a governmental agency that counts the number of fuel stations?

Easy way to improve that number is to mandate that all the Gas/diesel stations to carry at least one alt fuel stop for permit.

With many different alternative fuels and vehicles available that can use many different alternative fuels or renewable energy, you could choose which fuel to burn or use for the cheapest cost for you.
I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept or anything else. OR renewable energy from solar, tidal, hydro, thermal, tidal and/or nuclear.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

And why after 20 years they still have barely made a dent in making more public alternate fuel stations, now they are going to start from scratch, and start making electric filling stations? Good luck

If I could afford another vehicle, there's a CNG 3 miles from home.

Nothing like this going on in Arizona. Can't even find a public CNG station unless you drive to Sky Harbor Airport.

Well, it is encouraging to read that if the government is insisting on others using alternative fuels that it is pressing to make its own employees -- through their own vehicles -- do the same.

Still, we wish that this article had covered the fuel efficiency and costs of operating these vehicles compared to typical gasoline-powered cars.

BTW, the Gasoline Gallon Equivalent of ethanol is 1.5 compared to 1.0 for gas, so it automatically takes more of it to go the same distance.

Makes sense that fleets would be easier to refuel at their home stations. It will be costly for all of the gasoline stations to start offering a variety of alternative fuels!

I want less ethanol in my gasoline, not more. Ethanol as a motor fuel made from food crops has been a bad idea from day number one. I drive a "Flex fuel" company car and have been instructed to never buy E85 for it. The mileage sucks making it less economical than regular gasoline. Then there's the way it raises food prices.. No thanks!

Eventually enough of these stations and an alternative fuel will be sustainable.

Does this include stations that sell B-5 biodiesel? Hardly a "biofuel" in my book.
