Should we tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas prices?

GasBuddy Blog -- The U.S. average price of gasoline, approaching $3.70 per gallon, has increased 30 cents per gallon in the past 30 days. The highest prices in the country, after Hawaii ($4.39), are found in California where the state's average price is $4.30 per gallon and Santa Barbara records the highest average price in the state at $4.43 per gallon.

And, regretfully, the ides of March still remain ahead of us. but the short-term future is looking a lot like 2008, when we hit record prices as the U.S. average price peaked at $4.12 per gallon on July 15, 2008 and NYMEX crude oil peaked at $147 per barrel. Speculation on crude oil was driven then by the weak dollar and candidates running for president all said they had the answers to bring...

No, it is a political ploy, it will not make any real difference. Want to lower prices approve the keystone pipeline.

No!!!

Only greedy politicians unconcerned with the future and only their next cheap re-election would be in favor of opening the strategic oil reserve.

"Speculation on crude oil was driven then by the weak dollar and candidates running for president all said they had the answers..."

So 4 years later nothing has changed. Speculation runs rampant and politicians LIE. The system is BROKEN and NEEDS to be changed.

Absolutely not. The SPR is for emergencies. Diminishing the amount of oil in the SPR when oil is plentiful only weakens the country.

The last time it was released, they sold it on the oil market and there was NO relief at the pump. Save the SPR for the reason it was put into place for – In Case of Emergency, ICE.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

This article was posted yesterday. "It was created for strategic national defense and military use". No, leave it alone and develop our own resources and get off of OPEC, out of the coming possible nuclear war with Iran and avoid the coming economic collapse of our economy and a greater depression. The choice is clear to me but you decide.

More oil will make no difference, it will just add to the speculators profits resulting from market swings.

We don't need more oil, there is plenty of oil. We need to get wall street out of the oil market.

It didn't affect gas prices before and how could it? It's very little and whatever's released is swamped out by the world market. It's for emergencies only.

Strategic Petroleum Reserve

With a capacity of 727-million-barrels, U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve is the largest stockpile of government-owned emergency crude oil in the world. Established in the aftermath of the 1973-74 oil embargo, the SPR provides the President with a powerful response option should a disruption in commercial oil supplies threaten the U.S. economy. It is also the critical component for the United States to meet its International Energy Agency obligation to maintain emergency oil stocks, and it provides a national defense fuel reserve.
