GCR -- What will that car really cost over, say, five years of ownership? We've done the math for you on five different cars, all of them significant models in the market.

1. 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco - 28 city/42 highway/33 combined (MPG)
Price $19,325 - Gas $8,500 over 5 years - TOTAL $27,825

2. 2012 Toyota Prius - 51/48/50 combined (MPG)
Price $23,015 - Gas $5,750 over 5 years - TOTAL $28,765

3. 2012 Volkswagen Jetta TDI - 30/42/34 combined (MPG)
Price $22,775 - Diesel $9,000 over 5 years - TOTAL $31,775

4. 2012 Nissan Leaf - 106/92/99 combined (MPG equivalent)

It took $250,000 PER VEHICLE in US subsidies to build the VOLT and it is proving to not be worth the "investment" except as a re-election political move by Obama! NOBAMA2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you throw a car away after 5 years. They need to subtract the recovery price when you sell the car. Or to simplify, they could have just used lease rates to compare. When this is added in, the Cruze will be much lower in the list. Who is on top? Who knows, I can't see the future. That is where leasing comes in - they do the look-see into the future for you. If they're wrong, they lose - not you.

A vehicle, any vehicle, is worth to the owner what he expects it is worth. Most people love what they drive (I drive personally a large SUV and a Prius), and a large percentage will buy again what they own. (I would and I have) As they say, "Different strokes for different folks". I have numerous 'favorite cars and trucks', many of them no longer made. Everyone is different and everyone has their favorite type, brand, model, and engineering. Enjoy the Ride . .

Oil changes every 10,000 miles and never change a belt, there are none. As such, you can run the AC with the engine OFF. First maintenance other than oil and tire rotations, comes at 100,000 miles.
