Lawmakers want funds spent only on transportation

Washington Examiner -- Maryland lawmakers said Wednesday they couldn't support an increased gasoline tax without guarantees that revenue would be used only to fix the state's bridges and roads.

Some members of the House of Delegates said they had reservations about Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposed 6 percent sales tax on gasoline unless the revenue was reserved for transportation spending.

May be a good idea - BUT I just don't have any evidence that I can trust "lawmakers". They always seem to have loopholes or just plain change the rules after something passes.

I'll give Maryland two maybe three more years with O'Malley and you can start calling it Delaware or maybe West Virginia.

I have said many times that government will never never have enough money, they will always find something to spend your money on to try and get re-elected.

We have the same problem in Texas. The lege kept taking money out of the gas tax for education and other non-highway uses, then claimed that there wasn't enough money for roads and that they had to raise the gas tax.

Any money that the gov't gets as taxes never goes to the project it was intended for. They smell the money and we have fools like obummer and congress that just spend, spend and more of it.

Good for them! Fuel tax should only be spent to repair roads and bridges. Find another source for trains and bike paths!

Ticket speeding big rigs and collect the necessary funds that way. $1,000 minimum fines or so. That should do it.

Another PERFECT example of why the whole bureaucratic BS oozing out of Washington and state capitals such as VA is why we need true statesmen and NOT politicians. And we keep allowing it to happen - that is what is most discouraging!

Why don't we cut out all of those cozy gov pensions, and divert those monies to infrastruture. If we did, we'd likely have one of the best infrastructures in the world. Right now, our infrastructure is bottom-of-the-barrel.

When I drive south I intentionally do not buy gas in New York and Maryland because their gas prices are too high due to taxes..
