Town's Gas Boycott Leads to Lower Prices

msnbc.com -- Mayor Tim Baldermann and New Lenox residents are seeing gas prices come down for a change after a week-long boycott at the pump.

Prices in the town have dropped as much as 11 cents at some stations, while others have not given in just yet.

On Monday, Baldermann called for a boycott of gas stations in his town after prices hovered between $4.14 and $4.21 a gallon while neighboring towns saw significantly lower prices.

"If it was two cents they would have never heard from me," Baldermann told NBC Chicago Friday.

But prices were 12-to-20 cents higher, so he took a stand.

Marty Durbin, executive vice president of the American Petroleum institute, said the boycott was misguided. He explaining that each station has its own costs of doing business, and that's what led to ...

More power to them. If you feel you are being screwed, screw them back. I respect that. But I fear that tactic would not work everywhere. So it's nice to see it worked there.

taking a stand works if you want to see prices drop. let the high priced retailers go without sales. remember gas has a shelf life. the older it gets the more problems for the engines.

I've seen gas prices fall 15 cents per gallon near me and we didn't even have a boycott. These people are taking credit for something that was happening anyway.

They will always have some kind of reason. Gas is paid for months in advance before they reach the stations.

In Southern California, there has been no boycott, but prices have been falling steadily for over a month. They are down a little more than 50 cents.

It is great to watch neighboring stations keep up with one another as the prices drop. If they don't lower the price they lose the business.

Bruceha, good post. "What the market will bear" is a judgment they make based upon marketing history. Gas prices in my area are generally higher than in the rest of Rhode Island, but I'll travel up to 15 miles just to pay a few cents less per gallon - even if it doesn't save me any money because of the gas I have to use to get to the cheaper station. The station with the higher prices lose me as a customer, and if more people did that regularly, the distributors would notice that the market wasn't 'bearing' the higher price.

i agree with bruceha2000

stations that have easy access for delivery should less than those that take more to get to.

"what the market will bear" means what we can get away with

"In the end Baldermann believes his town's prices are higher because it's right off I-80,"

And he is right because:

"Marty Durbin ....He explaining (sic) that each station has its own costs of doing business"

And one of those costs is the gasoline. What he isn't telling you:
The price they pay is set by the distributor based on what they think the market will bear. There are lots of places in Vermont where the same brand gas 15, 25, 35 miles off the interstate is cheaper than the stations near the interstate. Clearly it costs LESS to deliver the gas to the stations just off the interstate. They should be paying less for it and therefore charging you less. But they aren't so they can't.

I paid $3.48 in Donalsonville, GA today! But it is ridiculous that we get excited about paying 3 1/2 bucks a gallon when it should be 1/2 of that.
