The Republican Nixon. Had he and Kissinger not opened up China the increased demand from that large, growing country would not impact the price of oil today.

Most industry watchers say that speculators add $20-40/per barrel to the cost of oil. Make the speculators take delivery of 10% of what they buy contracts on and watch what happens to the price.

Interesting that they didn't bother to mention this countries monetary policy. Since the world price of oil is in dollars when the dollar is devalued then the price of oil increases.

just let the prices drop. then the demand may go back up. keep them down the demand will stay up. and big oil can still make a profit by selling more for less.

It really doesn't matter what Politifact or any other source says, people will still always believe what they want to believe. Most Americans are so extremely uninformed that it is utterly ridiculous- it is simply sad that nobody cares enough, or are just too lazy to try to look into what is actually true and real.

While Politifact generally has it right, the real answer to this big question Who To Blame really comes down to US... that's right folks WE are responsible for electing thieves and liars to represent us and run this country!
WE ARE RESPONSIBLE for letting them do this to us, and then rewarding them by electing them into office again instead of giving them the boot. And if YOU didn't vote... YOU are still responsible for throwing away one of your most cherished rights that many other folks died to defend for you to have.

People need someone to blame so they look to the one man who heads our country. We all know the republicans want back in the White house but realistically Obama's not to blame. The oil companies are international and as such serve the entire world. Crude oil and gas is priced on the world market to the highest bidder and although you may want lower gas prices unless the world demand shrinks it's not going to happen. Those people on the street corners are just political pawns doing a fools job.

To simply say "speculators" is so misinformed. Speculators are actually to blame for bringing prices down recently.

Its not so tough to say because the oil companies said they thought that gas prices should be higher because the prices didn't keep up with the cost of living. They sure are keeping up with the cost of killing us.

"...volatility is how speculators make a profit." They are doing a really "good" job of manipulating it for their benefit, no one else.

If you mean the gas station owner, I believe he's selling only a few pennies over his cost and makes his money when you come in and buy the 'convenience' items that have the higher markup and profit.
the article references the false reasons and doesn't really point to what the true causes are
we need to keep digging to find out what REALLY is going to make a difference and get prices back down

Still think speculation is an unnecessary added burden to consumers and should be abolished...just like the ethanol mandates.

Obama may not be entirely to blame but one thing for sure he is a large part of the problem. What he's done has hurt the price of gas and I can't think of a single thing he's done thats helped.
In Alabama, where I'm from, people are saying Obama is going to lower gas prices prior to the election to help him get re-elected. Don't know if that possible but prices are starting to drop a little.
