Like your avatar, saw it on GaryBowles post. I have a FDNY hat bought on street on trip to NY Oct 26. 2011, close to the remains of Twin Towers with a 2" diameter button "Never Forget 911". Am from Raleigh, but parents moved to Newport News in mid 1941 for work. Been here ever since. Relatives in Fayetteville to Sanford.

No jobs here either. About the only way to work is fast food or open your own shop. We are about 50% retired here.

Looks like a great area. The park appears big on the map. Are you close to Lake Lure shore? Got any fish in it besides bass? I used to live in VA. Have been through the Carolinas but only on I95.
