American Society of Civil Engineers gives U.S. infrastructure a D+

GasBuddy Blog -- Once every four years the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) issues its 'Report Card' on U.S. infrastructure.

The D+ our nation's infrastructure earned on this year s report actually represents improvement. It's better than the D it gave the nation in 2009.

Solid waste, drinking water, wastewater, roads, and bridges all saw incremental improvements, and rail jumped from a C- to a C+. No categories saw a decline in grade this year.

ASCE says the modest progress is encouraging, but "it is clear that we have a significant backlog of overdue maintenance across our infrastructure systems, a pressing need for modernization, and an immense opportunity to create reliable, long-term funding sources to avoid...

I don't know what other parts of the country have done but in Wisconsin (especially around the Madison area) they took out the rails and made the beds into bike trials. That's real nice for bikers and hikers but the reality is those railroads were important. Some of the small towns are starting to realize that as they try to attract new businesses and find without rail service they're out of the running. I don't know who advised them to go in that direction (probably bicycle enthusiasts) but the money they take in from the bike trails doesn't come close to what they would get from a thriving business in their town.
