I don't know what other parts of the country have done but in Wisconsin (especially around the Madison area) they took out the rails and made the beds into bike trials. That's real nice for bikers and hikers but the reality is those railroads were important. Some of the small towns are starting to realize that as they try to attract new businesses and find without rail service they're out of the running. I don't know who advised them to go in that direction (probably bicycle enthusiasts) but the money they take in from the bike trails doesn't come close to what they would get from a thriving business in their town.
