Are wooden cars in America's future?

GasBuddy Blog -- At the Geneva International Motor Show next month, Finnish papermaker UPM-Kymmene will showcase an eco-friendly wooden car whose frame is built from tree pulp and plywood; the vehicle also runs on fuel made from papermaking byproducts.

UPM’s Biofore concept car meets all European crash and fire safety standards and offers all the features of a conventional car. “We wish to demonstrate that these materials respond to the needs of the automotive industry,” says Juuso Konttinen, UPM’s vice president for new business.

Could we be going back to the future? BusinessWeek raises an interesting question...

Planned obsolescence. Make it out of particleboard. It gets bigger and heavier the longer you have it until it finally disintegrates into a pile of sawdust with no notice.

Great! Lets keep raping the land of trees that take hundreds of years to replace. I'm not a tree hugger but I'd like my grandkids to be able to see a forest some day. Why is wood better than steel and aluminum?
