China's BYD to build electric buses in California

GasBuddy Blog -- Following a business development mission to Shenzhen, China, California Governor Jerry Brown has announced that Build Your Dreams (BYD), a Chinese bus company, will open a factory in Lancaster,CA; the first Chinese-owned vehicle plant on American soil, according to the LA Times.

BYD says it will put 10 new plug-in buses on the streets of Long Beach beginning next year after assembling them in the Lancaster facility, with hopes of producing dozens more in coming years.

"It's very significant," said Brown on the last full day of his weeklong visit to China. "I think it's very important that we start replacing the bus fleet with electric buses."

The new buses, which BYD says can run up to 150 miles with a full...

Instead of being a plug in, they need to figure out a way to make it a hybrid so it can recharge itself with all those stops that buses make, then we would be really thinking.

How much is the maintenance contract going to cost the taxpayer each year?

Taxpayers will lose BIG on the deal like they do with every promise made by DemocRATs in this state. Tax money paid them $2 million to open their Los Angeles office and $12 million for 10 electric buses that only travel 150 miles max on a single charge. That would translate to driving them only 100 miles before they are charged because you don't want to risk running out of power on the road. Then it will no doubt take hours to recharge them. That doesn't even take in account the millions of dollars of tax incentives too.

It is funny that in a state where we don't have enough electricity to power all homes and businesses, that the government spends a fortune for electric buses that cost a minimum of $1.2 million each and can only go 150 miles max. We are told not to run major appliances at home during the day so there is enough electricity to power businesses. On bad days there are brownouts so that we don't all lose power.

What are they going to do on those days when there are brownouts, blackouts or even disasters like a major earthquake? What was wrong with the CNG buses they had?

I suppose they will be looking for those gasoline powered vehicles to move people while they run gasoline powered generators to charge the electric buses. Buses that only move 100-150 miles on a charge are not going to be very useful in a city like Long Beach, CA. But then this state is already in huge debt and illegally runs a big budget deficit every year. Their budget is mandated by law to be balanced. Very stupid.

If you are saying the "dmv.ca.gov" at the bottom of the license plate makes it a government vehicle it doesn't. All new plates have that.

Dear Governor Brown, why don't you first build up your power distribution network, work to reduce your sky-high electric rates, and achieve a single summer without rolling blackouts before you deploy electric buses in your state? Priorities, Mr. Brown, priorities.

"Company officials say every vehicle produced in Lancaster will translate into just one California job.... BYD has "a history of overpromising and underdelivering.... In 2011, when BYD announced its new Los Angeles-based office, funded with nearly $2 million in incentives from the city, it promised 150 employees in the downtown office by the end of the year. Today the company employs about 40 people."

red5529 - "Don't we have enough foreigners here already."

Americans will be building the buses, that is why they are opening a factory in Lancaster, CA.
Don't forget that this country was build on immigrants.

Not really zero emissions, just moving the emissions out to the power plants that are generating the electricity. Eventually we will need more powere plants and thus more emissions.

Great, giving government subsidies to foreign companies. When will we allow industries to sink or swim on their own.

With a 150 mile charge, the bus won't make it through an 8 hour day without needing to be charged again. What a waste of time and money.

just more evidence how screwed up our trade policies are, we could just walk away from these treaties that really give away our sovereignty , and we should! They've killed our job growth here. It's good that electric buses are being produced, but by all means it should be done here by American companies! Absolutely!
