or how about if you are not a traveler and spend 90 percent of your time in the same area, cotsco or sams could very well beat the 6 cents deal

@zeitgeist669 -
You picked up on exactly the same part of the article that jumped out at me...
"A code at the register, in wallet cards and on applications allows customers to scan and go directly to the ExxonMobil website. At that point ExxonMobil can track what types of websites the customer previously visited and will target those sites for advertising of their offers."
"So it's really more the Google model then Shell..."
EXACTLY!!!

If any product or service is labeled as "Smart" you should stay clear of it.
Think about it. Leasing a car is almost never a smart choice so years ago GMAC came up with the Smart Lease Program.
What kind of idiot would go on American highways in a go-kart? Those who buy Smart cars.
So Exxon has a credit card that you will eventually pay interest on and that interest is not at the 3.5% mortgage rate, try something like 10 times that. So, knowing it is a dumb idea to have such a card, Exxon names it Smart.
The "smart" ones are the ones who get others to buy into their products and not the ones buying.

BIG WHOOP! I get 10% off using my Kroger rewards card, some times 20%. It doesn't add up to much when you do the math. But I think it's a mental thing. Your brain will tells you to jump thru hoops to save a dollar or two. Plus my Kroger card gets me free minutes sometimes on my phone.

This promotion is being directed at those using lots of fuel and not those trying to economize their fuel usage.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Exxon premium gas in Suitland Maryland $4.19. Gasbuddy ask me if this is the right price. Other stations in the area sell premium at $3.99. Exxon is big rip off in my opinion.

No thanks! --
Our local Family Fare grocery store / gas stations are offering a .50 - cent per gallon discount this weekend (Thu. - Sat.) for customers who buy their groceries there and spend $75 dollars in one shopping trip. -- Now that's a good deal!

Brookshire's chain here offers 10 cents off a gallon for each $100 you spend in groceries (which doesn't take much nowadays). You can stockpile the points for up to three months. Later this month, I'll use my 1000 points and get $1 off/gallon (up to 30 gallons). Granted you can only use the points the one time, but we average racking up about 500-600 pts. per month, which is 50-60 cents off for one fillup.

Is the Smart Card good only at Exxon and Mobil stations, we presume?
How will ExxonMobil recapture the 6 cents per gallon? Will it jack the cost of their gas up by the same or even higher rate?

Don't have any ExxonMobil stations close here. Kroger offers 10 cents/gal up to 20 gal discounts after $100 grocery purchase at Kroger gas stations, so a grand savings of $2. The ExxonMobil is a better savings.
