Illinois Tollway Seeks to Raise Speed Limits on Some Roads

GasBuddy Blog -- The Illinois Tollway Board of Directors recently approved an administrative rule change needed to increase the speed limit to 70 mph on some rural segments of the Tollway.

The recommendation follows a change in state law signed by Governor Pat Quinn that increases the maximum speed permitted on Illinois roads from 65 mph to 70 mph, beginning January 1, 2014.
“We’re committed to enacting this law responsibly while maintaining the high standard of safety that has always been our top priority,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur.

People can easily safely drive 75+, 80+, so why only 70?

hopefully it will work for the snow belt. Does just fine in the Southern regions where there's no snow.

Post speed limit on I-94 into Chicago at 65 and people probably still drive 75.

I remember driving 70 mph in Illinois when I was a teen. I hope their roads are well maintained.

This will usually reduce accidents as drivers become less frustrated but speeders will still provide lots of ticket revenue.

I tried driving 70mph on that stretch of road more than once, and got passed by every other car out there. The speed limit is honored mostly in the breach.

The higher speed limit moves more vehicles is a given time. Puts off building more lanes, but eventually will mean widening construction.

This is a couple days old now.. 70 mph is insulting! Should raise to 75 on tollways... Get with the program, Illinois. Look at Texas's example.
