NHTSA launches 'SaferCar' app for iPhones

GasBuddy Blog -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is launching a new iOS app for iPhones and iPod Touches that will provide real-time vehicle safety information to consumers from NHTSA's SaferCar.gov site.

To call it 'comprehensive' might be an understatement. The new SaferCar app allows users to search its 5-Star Safety Ratings for vehicles by make and model, locate car seat installation help, file a vehicle safety complaint, find recall information and subscribe to automatic notices about vehicle recalls.

NHTSA says that it will also give developers real-time access to the data that powers this app through an Application Programming Interface (API), enabling them to integrate these data into new and existing...

I thought when I read the headline the phone would monitor my car for safety issues, like hey your going to fast. But now, it's only an app to display what should already be on the Internets available to the consumer.

Next time you're ready for an upgrade, get a phone with a 4" screen. A little bit longer, but no wider. You would be amazed at the difference in ease of use, particularly in apps that support landscape mode.

As if an app for an iPod Touch is going to be really useful in a moving car? Guess they were being ready for the cars with Wi-Fi hotspots. Cellular data is really expensive if you get it delivered at any kind of speed or reliability. Guess the overpaid Government bureaucrats never considered this. They probably get Uncle Sugar paying for their cellular data in the first place.

Agree with mrjames1818:
"I can get this information on my computer - other than automatic notices about vehicle recalls do I need an app? Just don't use it while driving.
How about a required app that disables a phone while driving?"

Why they spent money on an iPhone app rather
than just beefing up their website is beyond
me. Gonna check it out while driving?

NHTSA launches 'SaferCar' app for iPhones, sharing useful information and registering complaints Is A Good Thing! But, Do Not Use the App while Driving!
Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!
