NY senator pushes for electronic proof of car insurance

GasBuddy Blog -- Sometimes when you see common sense prevail and help consumers across the country --in such small steps, one state at a time-- it makes you wonder why the states that trail behind are so slow to act...

In New York State Sen. Greg Ball (R-Patterson) announced that he will be introducing a bill legalizing electronic auto insurance proof. Ball said the bill will be introduced during the upcoming legislative session that convenes in January.

According to Ball, the legislation is “pro-consumer.” Provided that the legislation passes, the state’s motorists can go to their auto insurers for a smartphone app that will allow those drivers to electronically prove that they have the New York car insurance required to operate a vehicle...

How long will it be before Big Brother requires people to have electronic proof of health insurance? They could scan people on the street from a distance and detain those who don't meet the requirements. This would be accomplished via either an electronic card people are required to carry with them at all times or an implanted chip. Why do liberals not value liberty and freedom? Can't people see where this type of thing is leading?

My insurance company gives me two copies of proof of car insurance everytime that I renew my car insurance, one for the car and one for my wallet. It works like a champ. I have no apps, "smart phones", or other costly things to get into my way or my bank account.

Some states (i.e. Georgia) have databases that the police and DMV can access. The databases are updated electronically by the insurance companies.

If you're going to do electronic proof I'd rather be signaled whether other drivers had drivers' education and have a valid license. That's a much bigger immediate threat.

The only reason for an app is because that state Senator's got a friend or relative who will make $$ on it.
Civilized, intelligent states have that info computerized and the cop gets that info automatically on the screen in his/her car.

There is no reason this information can not pop up when a license plate is run. no one needs a smart phone app. That said I would have to read the bill (and I read a lot of bills - I have even read the Obama care bill cover to cover but that is for a different board) before deciding if I support it or not. the problem with these bills is they are often written so poorly than they open the flood gates for companies to sell private information.

I read and posted response yesterday. Its only Thursday and articles are repeating? California has a system that sends your last known address a message within a few weeks that your insurance company has notified them that your insurance has lapsed and if you don't get insurance within a short time the state will revoke your registration and charge you a new registration fee to get legal again after you bring proof of insurance to your local DMV and waste half a day getting the new papers filed.

I have so many insured vehicles, several of which are not stored at my home, so it's hard to keep current cards in them (RV, motorcycles, etc.). I'm not sure what someone would do if they were borrowing my car and didn't have access to my insurance login. Is it related to plate? (Steal a plate... steal their insurance authorization, too?)
