Oil industry launches attack on RFS

GasBuddy Blog -- The American Petroleum Institute (API) is taking its message that the federal Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is costing consumers, The Hill reports. The ads, which are running in the Washington, D.C., area, as well as in several states, are on radio and television, plus print and online.

The “significant campaign” talks about how consumers will pay for RFS. “By mandating higher ethanol content in gasoline than is safe, it threatens American consumers, the investments they’ve made in their vehicles, and our economic well-being,” said Bob Greco, downstream director for the institute.

Biofuel groups are hitting back: “This is just more of the same from Big Oil. They will stop at nothing to maintain their near monopoly on...

"Costing consumers." That's good, I'm going to use that sometime when someone doesn't pay me what I want.

More ethanol in our fuel lowers
MPG in vehicles. If the 15% law
does go into effect the government
should be responsible for damages
caused by it!
Me thinks class action lawsuit.

cehollis: you probably already are pumping 15 or more % EtOH. Best thing is to get a product that helps mitigate the EtOH.

Yes, I know, it's produced by Pig Oil, to counteract a product that they put into the fuel in the first place. Can make ya go crazy, eh?

Big oil wines but they get kick backs for mixing it. They just want to complain to keep fuel costs up at the pump. Common sense on the consumer to know what they pump in there cars.

My vehicles are rated for E-10 gasoline or lower. So, regardless of all the propaganda from either side of this issue, if E-15 or higher gasoline are my only options in the future, my vehicles will be damaged.

DustyHorse: in part b/c it's not just 10% EtOH. Everyone in the supply chain adds some EtOH to the mix to stretch profits. In the end, it's a lot more than 10%.

GBFWB72 ethanol subsidies were cut some time back. BIG OIL receives billions in subsidies, tax breaks, deferrals etc. If gasoline is so great, why can't it survive in the marketplace without them?

If corn ehtanol is so good, why do we the taxpayer have to support it with subsidies? And it also raises the cost of our food corn in the process too, along with raising the price of everythign since it makes fuel cost more to deliver everything.

Let ethanol survive on its own without subsidies. Then give me th echoice of what I want to buy at the pump based on the supply and demand of the free market and consumer choice, not what some politicians think is best for me!

the code was broken long ago its called hemp it makes ethanol, methanol and biodiesel that runs better than diesel with no sulfur-it is grown with no insecticides herbicides fertilizer,it grows in bad soil and low water conditions. The problem? It makes way too much sense and big oil & big chemical companies hate it(read A little history on it-our government loves it during war)it also has at least 40,000 other uses.

ethanol comes from food products, and until they break the cellulose code and get a greater yield of ethanol from crops, I think limited food for fuel is a good idea.

Henry Ford designed his cars to run on Gasoline or ethanol. It is big oil and API that now has the engine manufacturers making it so they can run on straight ethanol.

No surpise...the oil company lobby group doesn't support higher ethanol levels in gas...I would be surprised if they didn't come out with a campaign against this change. They aren't looking out for the consumer...they are only interested in what is best for the oil industry, which is to keep demand for oil high.

Corn is for feeding people and animals, not gasoline. If the current RFS requirements remain, then the blenders should buy sugar cain ethanol which is 45% less expensive than corn ethanol and pass the reduction on to customers.

Why would progressive politicians care what happens to the peasants?
