Not really since those that really make it in the news tend to have manufacturers that make the appropriate adjustments to improve their vehicles and in many cases are better vehicles than those you never hear about having recalls.

ə no, it is not a consideration.
i do not buy vehicles by brand, but as transportation for the right price. so i see no reason to spend time researching recall history. ə

No, there's tremendous changes in a few years in the auto industry. Considering I purchase a new/used car every 10 years, I'd give the benefit of the doubt to whomever has the best reviews, and cheapest cost of ownership(for a commuter car, anyway).

I would look at a recall history more now as social media has given all of us an opportunity to report vehicle defects to the world, so auto manufactures are responding quickly to fix them. Thus too many recalls of a particular vehicle mean I might stay away from it.

Most cars have recalls these days. You just have to sift thru them to see which ones are serious and which ones are not. Also, some manufacturers are actually pro-active with the recalls and volunteer to do so, while others have to be dragged into investigations before they will succumb to do a recall.
I think most people know which manufacturers are the evil ones that treat recalls as a pure expense charge.
The good ones tend to test their components better and reduce the need for recalls in the first place. But when the recalls happen, they use recalls as a way to improve reliability of their cars and show their customers that they care about them years after the car leaves the factory.

All depends on whether I already have a good vibe with a brand... If I do... then recall history is not an issue. If my vibe is not good... then I may think twice about a brand and/or particular products. I'm also able to recognize that some recalls are not due to the brand... but the contractors who have made component parts. If the parts are bad... it makes the brand look bad too to those who do not do their homework.

Of course recall history is important, but its also important to distinguish real recalls from politically motivated recalls that are only intended as an attempt to bring a particular make down (look at toyota for example, there is zero proof of accelerating cars).

By the time I purchase a car, the recall history is irrelevant. If they haven't fixed all the issues in 10 years, they aren't very important.

Not particularly. It's something I normally think about / look into a year or two (or three) AFTER I purchase it! Go figure.

Has a tendency to make the brand more reliable after an issue is made "public".

Every automaker will produce a vehicle which comes down with a recall. Some recalls are small and some are big. It doesn't mean much unless the recall occurs often and is a very large problem.

Recalls only occur when a solution has been developed. Or at least a Band-Aid.
