I say NO to required helmets
Yes I do wear one, but I am required to by a law voted in by mostly non riders "Let Those Who Ride Decide"
Almost as bad as in the mid "80s the state of New Jersey wanting to require safety restraints for passengers on motorcycles STUPID

This is just a little ridiculous.

1. It's a personal choice.
2. Why are you allowing non-motorcycle riders to vote? Because they are the ones that don't see us?
3. I drive a bus. I am the only person on that bus with a seat belt. Yea, that makes a lot of sense. So lets make motorcycle riders wear helmets.
4. Make proof of insurance at registration mandatory. That makes more sense.

Each year about 40k people die in accidents. Of those motorcyclist make up roughly 1\8 of those killed. Most deaths are traumatic brain injury, in cars. Should all motorist be required to wear a helmet?

I didn't think so....only if it does not affect you right?

No, they should not be made to wear a helmet unless every motorist is required to.

to be certified they are tested at 15 mph, so if you go down in a parking lot you'll probably benefit. at speed - maybe .....
that being said - no to required.
yes - every time I ride.
it should be personal choice.

yes, I am a rider, and even though it is annoying sometimes to where a helmet, it can make a big difference when you are in an accident.

I think "EVERYONE" should be wearing them... Cars... Trucks....Airplanes... M/C
Thats everyone...Politicians, Government, Everyone that drives or rides in a vehicle capable of causing brain damage in the event of a accident.
Especially cops.....Helmets could help in the case of bullets too.

No. Should be up to the rider if over 21. Adults are suppose to be able to make reasonably good decisions, that said it should be illegal to use a cell phone while driving any vehicle, paying attention while driving should get ALL of our attention while driving a bike or a cage.

I wear one when riding my bicycle. One fall onto the pavement even at peddling speeds can cause serious injury. At traffic speeds, you usually need a box to take you home in.

I wear my helmet regardless of a state having no helmet law..
I equate a helmetless head to a splatting watermelon on the pavement in a crash

Motorists have to wear seatbelts, motorcyclists should at least wear helmets but they are so vulnerable it may not make any difference. My bicycle helmets over the years have saved me from more serious injury. I have cracked 4 for them over 30+ years of bicycle racing. And dented others. They have gone from leather straps to very good plastics with good ventilation. Motor cycle helmets are rather hot by comparison.

It's a very good idea for motorcyclists to wear helmets and for motorists to wear seat belts and keep their kiddies in child seats. BUT, it isn't any of the government's business. Just because something's a good idea doesn't mean it should be mandatory, any more than the fact that something's a bad idea means that it should be illegal. 1984, here we are.

>"spring is "open season on motorcycle riders". Cars turn in front of us, and they don't get charged"

That is why I gave up riding for a number of years when I was living in a city. I had a lot of close calls with cars.

in Japan if a car driver states "I didn't see them" they are ticketed and 100% liable.
Here? They are let off. The mentality in the US with law enforcement learns towards "they want to ride, then they want to get hurt. It's on them".
I tease, tongue in cheek, that spring is "open season on motorcycle riders". Cars turn in front of us, and they don't get charged. It's absurd.

When you drive, you need to look and pay attention. If you don't, you need to be charged.

I ride. I wear. I smart!
Riders claim they are in control... but not of that nut, bolt, stone, bug etc that ricochets off your forehead or into your eye.

I find this concerning - ALL 50 states require seat belts, yet only half of them require a helmet. When a state tries to pass a helmet law, those who don't want to wear one fight it. Yet the car drivers never fought a seat belt law (that said, they just don't wear it... but it is hard to see, and often is not as primary offense - aka revenue generator, in most states.

>But would they have died with a helmet?? (decapitated, broken neck, head crushed, etc)
>Read into the statistics

That is in their report also. It is a long and comprehensive report.
As for percentages, they also have the raw numbers and age groups.

I listed the accident causes just for information's sake. Alcohol and riding seems to be a bad mix.

Statistics.. like these are usually designed to prove a point that the party is trying to make... In this case the Government....
There are usually many questions that go unanswered.

If someone dies without a helmet... "MARK IT JACK"
But would they have died with a helmet?? (decapitated, broken neck, head crushed, etc)

Hypothetically if a state had 5,000 licensed M/C riders and 1 death last year then had 2 this year.... Fatalities have increased by 100%

No place does it show ...Ages...Years experience....Formal training....

Speeding, reckless driving, DUI, Drugs just name a few shouldn't be in the statistics because all them can kill you helmet or not...automobile or M/C.

Read into the statistics.....Their brought to you by your "Trustworthy" Government...

Please don't get the idea I'm against helmets....
I think "EVERYONE" should be wearing them... Cars... Trucks....Airplanes... M/C
Thats everyone...Politicians, Government, Everyone that drives or rides in a vehicle capable of causing brain damage in the event of a accident.

Statistics...

U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
- Head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes. In 2011, 40% of motorcyclists killed on the roads in the U.S. were not wearing a helmet.
- A motorcyclist not wearing a helmet is 40% more likely to die of a head injury than one who wears a helmet.
- A motorcyclist not wearing a helmet is 15% more likely to suffer a nonfatal injury than one who wears a helmet.
- It is estimated that helmets reduce the likelihood of a crash fatality by 37%.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Highway Loss Data Institute reports:
- A little less than half of all motorcycle driver deaths in 2009 involved no other vehicle.
- More than 42% of motorcyclist deaths in 2011 were killed in a two vehicle accident.
- Of all 2011 motorcyclist deaths 35% were the direct result of the rider speeding.
- Of the 2009 motorcycle deaths that involved only the motorcyclist... 48% were speeding, 42% had blood alcohol concentrations of 0.08 percent or higher.
- Of the 2011 total motorcycle deaths, 33% were under the influence of alcohol.

Governor’s Highway Safety Administration (GHSA):
- In 2008, 43% of all victims that were fatally injured in a motorcycle accident were not wearing helmets. That number was 44% in 2009.
- Fatalities increased in all seven states that repealed helmets laws, with Louisiana coming in 1st with a fatality increase of 108%.

magicpete sez....

If all injured motorcyclists were willing to pay the FULL amount of surgery, hospitalization, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and on and on, I would be ok with their not wearing a helmet.
>>
I had a Motorcycle accident...cost over $40,000.00. My insurance co. picked up the tab less the deductibles..... I wasn't wearing a helmet !!!

(my head was fine... It was my hand that required "re-constructive" surgery.)

Obey the laws ???.... on the contrary I do obey the laws.... maybe that's the reason I'm still riding after 50 years....Most accidents occur when the driver of the automobile breaks the law. The excuse is always "I didn't see them"
When you can't see a 400-500lb motorcycle with a 6' rider it's well beyond the time you should have been banned from driving. A child running across the street is much smaller and harder to see.
