The government needs to stay out of this. We are in the situtation we are now with gas prices going up and down like a roller coaster because the government won't stop this which they have the power to do. This is just my opionion.

yeah fed/state need to halt hidden info from usa citizens ... as far as oil... I think that fed/state need to stop depending on foreign oil and start depending on our usa soil to find oil... then usa citizen can begin to dream because of more money in wallet/purse... make sense ? I think it will help alot if just stop depending on other country for oil and start using usa soil oil... hmmmm

Hold the oil company executives PERSONAlly responsible. use their cash to pay for the clean up and some jail time wouldn't hurt either. If they knew they would have to pay for their decisions they wouldn't cut so many corners.

Go full bore on drilling. The risks are outweighed by the awesome benefits that oil has provided to mankind. Oil has improved the lives of the human race more than we can imagine. We are all better off with oil in our lives.

Do the drilling but at a limited amount and to pass on a fair amount to the consumer at a fair price without the high prices.

BP has a long history of disasters, a lot more than any other business in this field. They should suspend BP from more off shore oil drilling. Why punish those who follow the rules. They should increase the supervision and inspection of all other BP rigs also.

This was a tough one. I chose "Overhaul the Minerals Management Service" but I would follow that up with "Prosecute wrongdoing by government inspectors" and "Investigate and prosecute other negligence". "Suspend deep-water drilling until it's safer" is intriguing but I do not really think it will be "safer". Rather there should be better proven plans in place to deal with a problem. Not the current "we make it up as we go along" method.

Require a $5 billion bond for each deep sea well in development or production. Require a funded 'end-of-life' plan for shutting down well no longer in production

Conserve! Other option, go full blast building Atomic Power Plants and CNG vehicles and electric cars. Then close all deep sea platforms.
It's Bush and Chenneys fault.

they should be more critical with the inspection and contracting of new wells there should be a manditory shutoff valve at the very base of the well so this will not happen again

I'm of the opinion that we have no right to drill off shore in the most environmentally important of our sustainability.

For now, all people working for or owning businesses in the gulf area in fishing, travel and any retail operations should be required to file monthly income reports compared to 2009 monthly income. (This includes businesses out of the area that deal with Gulf related activities, such as travel agencies that have a reduction in income related to lower travel to gulf areas.) This should continue until the condition of the gulf is returned to pre-spill conditions. In addition to the cost of administering these reports and payment distribution, BP should be required to pay all of these people/companies the difference to make 2010 and future monthly income equal to 2009 income + 2% per year. In addition BP should be required to pay for all cleanup, plus the expense of re-establishing fish and wildlife quality and quantities to pre-spill conditions. For the future, financial penalties should be established by law such that no other company would want to risk a repeat. Financial re-embursements and other procedures such as above, should be spelled out so there is no need for meetings or hearings to establish eligibility. Heaven forbid should there be a reoccurrence, the offending company must immediately deposit $1 billion dollars with the federal government, and as expenses are applied to this amount another billion shall be deposited each time when the available balance drops below 1/4 billion. Companies will voluntarily put the necessary safeguards into place when they know the choice of not doing so is financial disaster.

Don't drill in the Gulf, import all our oil, set ourselves up for another oil embargo, then it will make the 1970s look like good times.
