Don't see where backup cameras would help this. Should be areas reserved for sedans in parking lots like in parking ramps.

Had it not been for the one on my car a 3 yr old precious little girl would likely been a fatality when she darted out from behind the van parked beside me in a local Target parking lot. For safety, make them mandatory and remove the cd/DVD to offset the cost.

They go against what we learned in drivers school - Turn your head and look! What's wrong with that. Cameras are for lazy people.

You can't see how far away whatever it is that you are going to run over, only that it is there. They will also be low resolution. Both of those factors make human eyes looking out the rear window vastly superior. We should pass a law that says you have to look out the rear window instead.

If you need it, pay for the option, but don't force everyone to buy something they don't need. I almost never use reverse: I get to work while the parking lot is empty and call always drive into my spot, then drive out while going forward on the way home. The house has a circular drive-way so no need to ever go backwards.

You can't use it to steer in my experience so you're looking at your mirrors, not the camera. The alarms are better becuse you hear the obstruction (pole, pet, child) and can stop before you hit.

These options also add to the price of the vehicle. B\u camera's are a benefit on some larger vehicle such as mini vans. B\u alarms are an effective warning device and less expensive than cameras. When you learn to drive you are taught to make sure the area is clear\unobstructed before backing-up. Just the same as your supposed to check your mirrors and use turn signals before changing lanes. If your vehicle is equipped with a b\u camera or blind spot monitors, etc. and you still have an accident. Are you more liable for failing to use the devices?

They may be nice options and market will drive price and they will likely be standard in the future. For those that think these will save lives, it isn't that simple. Too many electronics and distractions already. There are too many that are just going around in a fog and will stare blankly at the screen and ignore other sensory input around them. A camera takes active utilization by the person, just like walking around their car and using their mirrors. You cannot legislate away stupidity or accidents. Back up sensors would do more and may break through the fog of today's distracted drivers. Parents need to also take more responsibility with their kids. Period. Folks keep talking about the 22 month in FL. Well, that accident might have happened even with a camera - a kid running behind a car can happen too fast for someone to respond to regardless of a camera. That mother should have had that 22 month old firmly in tow. She was distracted and went back to her car letting the kid wander off in a busy parking lot. BUC (at the level that would be mandated) would not be of great quality. They do not have good depth of view, and do not cover all "potential" risks of backing up. Folks will rely on them rather than good common sense and their full set of senses as they focus on a screen INSIDE their car and not see the big picture. They are a tool that can be used to help, or a tool that can be used improperly and add more risk. Leave them to those that want to pay for them, and hopefully, they will be the ones to use them properly.

Ultrasonic proximity alarms such as on many minivans and SUVs would provide adequate protection for the alert driver from items in the pathway of the vehicle.
