Yes. How many times do you hear on your local news that someone had backed over a toddler and said "I didn't know he/she was there!"

The only time rear view cameras should be required is when the driver's view is consistently blocked by the structure of the vehicle. Ultrasonic proximity alarms such as on many minivans and SUVs would provide adequate protection for the alert driver from items in the pathway of the vehicle.

People should be careful and responsible when behind the wheel because it is the right thing to do, not because it is a government or other agency rule.

Not "NEED" but should because vehicle now a day have super HUGE blind spot done on purpose. Those "more trunk space". So they push the trunk up.
Oh, and stupid parents too. They don't teach their kids. Never stay or walk behind a huge vehicle that can't see you, which also include trucks and buses.

Today we have mandatory seat belts, even in the far rear of my minivan that I only use for cargo. mandatory air bags, mandatory shift quadrants, mandatory anti-lock brakes, mandatory “third brake lights”, mandatory (by the manufacturer) anti-theft systems, mandatory steering wheel/ ignition/ brake interlocks, mandatory 5MPH bumpers, mandatory low volume horns (NY), mandatory head rests, mandatory bumper heights (in some states), mandatory catalytic converters, and other emission equipment, mandatory (essentially) ethanol in our gasoline. And if you add in the state inspection requirements, the mandatory list goes on through volumes, and volumes. Forget the argument concerning the validity of these “Mandatorys”—many are reasonable. Others are not. Forget the actual cost of providing all these items. What do you suppose the cost of the paperwork and the cost of the bureaucracy is to enforce all these “manditorys”? Anyone want to take a guess?

Aside from a lack of justification to issue mandates (Not a part of the authority delegated to the FED), Federal agencies have been known it mandate rules (Which have the force of LAW) which conflict with other bureaucratic rules. A good example of this is O.S.H.A. requires vehicles on construction sites to "beep" when the vehicle is put in reverse. It is alleged that this is a "safety" feature to alert pedestrians on said sites.
Another rule mandated by O.S.H.A. (in order to protect the hearing of workers on construction sites) is for workers to install approved ear plugs because of "noise pollution". The Problem with this law is that you cannot here the unmistakable "beep" of the vehicle when the gear shifter is placed into reverse, if you are wearing the O.S.H.A. approved ear plugs!
There is no way that you can win. The solution is to get the Federal Government to stay out of the affairs of industry. If it is NOT a delegated power for the Federal government, then they should back off.

Don't really think they should become a govt. mandate but...considering the safety value that the camera and/or the distance buzzer/beepers are, they hopefully will become a very commonly used option, especially with the popularity of minivans, suvs, capped pickups, etc. that offer no real vision of the close up rear. The manufacturers could certainly produce them in high volume for less than current pricing. You know, it hasn't been so long ago that seat belts were uncommon, and if you're old enough you can remember when turn signals were an option or an after market add on. Would we really want to be without those today?? Cameras will definitely prevent some tragic deaths, maybe your young child.

I like back-up cams and the many other technologies that make our world safer. The question was if they should be mandatory. No! No! No!

I answered "no" to mandatory, I do however think all cars should come with some kind of backup alarm system, (sonar detector / beeper, camera or such). The problem with a backup camera is the monitor display, it is very easy to fixate on the goal of backing up and not see the other items in, or entering the field of view. I drive a large motorhome (with Camera as well as an alarm beeper for rear and side blind spots), I also drive a PU camper with backup alarm and sonar range sensor. I will add a camera when I find one that meet my requirements. But I do not like "mandatory" for a camera system on all vehicles.

Mandatory is strong word. A good choice for safety and possibly insurance reasons. It should be an option. Kind of like being forced (mandatory) to have On-star or some other form of GPS. I do believe that each car buyer should be able to choose the equipment they want on their vehicle(s)). Not enforced by law to have something they don't want. If you have GPS and a camera, who's to say that you aren't being recorded. Would you really want that?

Should not be MANDATORY. I don't want to pay for that which I don't need. I have a small car and I can see my bumpers and what's around my car. I used to drive a conversion van and could have definitely used one on that vehicle, but that proves my point. Some cars/SUVs can benefit, but if I don't need it I don't want to be forced to pay for it.

I see a lot of "no" responses. I purchased a backup camera for my older car. It is the best thing. It has a wide angle & lets you see if people or cars are approaching when backing out of a parking space. You are backing blind when you start out of these spaces. I is a a good safety feature. I don't think it is gov't control. Just common sense.

NO, they should not be required!
If a manufacturer wants to put them on, that should be their choice. If a buyer wants it, it should be an option. The more the government controls these items. the more they control YOU!!!
Don't let the government control your life. If you can't drive safely yourself tehn DO NOT DRIVE!
Stop government control! Stop government control! Stop government control!

I surely go along with backup cameras in all vehicles. If you've ever had a bad back you'll know what I'm talking about. Plus along with a backup beeper like they have on trucks and I think some cars already have a mechanism that will stop your vehicle when something is behind your car. Good safety tip.

To Lichelle75, and other who feel that backup cameras will prevent accidents, please remember that life is full of unexpected events.
"If she had the camera, she may have seen him since he was smaller than the back of her car." contains the key word "may". Having a backup camera is no guarantee that this or any other number of events in driveways, parking lots, parking garages and any other place that people back up vehicles, won't occur.
At best, back up cameras reduce the risks involved in backing up, not eliminate them. If you want a 100% solution, hire a person to stand to the rear of your vehicle (where you can see them, of course).

I agree with LancerGFP. I don't think they should be "Mandatory", even if I feel they are very beneficial in any normal vehicle (so I'm not counting motorcycles, ATV's, old fashioned tractor with no cab, etc.). I would be concerned with it's impact on the price of vehicles and how it would affect liability in accidents as well, before I was willing to make them "Mandatory". Backup cameras are a great addition to be used in conjunction with your mirrors, not simply to replace using them.

You said "all vehicles" so why would you want a back-up camera on a motorcycle (it's a "vehicle")??? A lot of service vehicles have had back-up cameras for years and it helps quite a bit, but private cars and pick-up trucks??? It doesn't make sense for cars & pick-ups because you have windows all around the vehicle. Back-up cameras help in service trucks because even with the large "West Coast style" rear-view mirrors, you can't see behind that large enclosed box body on the truck chassis. They also help when backing up to the loading dock to load & unload. I've used them many times when backing up the company truck to the loading dock with a full height/width box truck.

I think that we have to be careful on this, that if they were made mandatory there will be significant number of people who will rely merely on the camera's image. Someone else made comments about those annoying things on the side and one inside of the cars called 'Mirrors'. Admittedly people have to 'move' and 'turn' to use the mirrors but this is a whole lot better than finding you have just injured a child or anyone else?! Mandatory - No Nice to have with big potential benefits - Yes.

I am one of those that don't want the safety features shoved down my throat!!
These features "as you call them" cost the consumer!! Let those that want them,, PAY FOR THEM, PERIOD !!!
We don't need any more Mandatory Regulations Mandated by Big Government ??

I drive a Prius that has a back up camera. It is great. Even though that car is made with excellent visibility the added safety is worth it to me. I don't really see why anyone would argue against adding a safety feature like that to new vehicles. I would actually look for this feature in future vehicle purchases if it does not become mandatory.

No i don't think they should be, I have dually with sport mirrors which create a blind spot around my dually fenders and behind me, I also have a three your old and an eight year old at my house, Any smart parent will teach their children that when they hear a vehicle to go to a safe spot, ours happens to be a sidewalk along the side of our house, they hear my truck and insatnly both of them are on the sidewalk, the 8 yr old holds the 3 yr olds hnd and puts her hand up in the air for safety, if you can't see that then you don't deserve to have a license, also when backing up anywhere, the only acceptable speed is idle, all of you drivers in such a hurry that feel you need to back out of your parking spot at 20 MPH need to slow the he!l down because thats when people get hurt, don't look in your rearview over your trunk lid and use that as an excuse for not seeing something, use your side mirrors, then you can see anything coming from the side, if you really think that its necessary to have a camera on your car then you may as well give up driving all together because last time I checked, the state doesn't allow the use of a camera in your manuverability test to get your license.

Personally, I think the key word in the question for me is Mandatory. Great accessory, but I don't want people telling me I have to have it. We have gotten along fine without the cameras for a lot of years. They are not flawless and are yet something else to go wrong in a car. If you are backing up, its your responsibility to know that the back of your car is clear, camera or no camera.

They are a great safety feature. Once again, a child had been run over due to not being seen by the driver while backing up. My Chrysler also has an audio warning to let me know if something is behind or coming at me from the side. There is also a readout (green, yellow, red) to show how close you are to an object.
