No special tools here. I don't mind the extra tech help, I just am wary of it being made mandatory. New cars are expensive enough as it is!

Special mirrors? warming sensor? What are we going to be on automatic pilot soon? What the heck, what ever happened to good old fashioned driving, or has that gone out of style? If people need help just to back up how the heck did they get their drivers license in the first place!

What percentage of vehicles have these things? Relative to current models? Relative to what's on the road?

I don't rely completely on mirrors. I prefer to rely on what I see with my own two eyeballs. We have a back up camera in our van but at night it is totally useless.

I have a 2010 RAM 1500 BigHorn 4x4 I bought a rear backup camera and it has come in so handy. All truck owners need to have one.

I try to avoid backing up when possible, because I think it's dangerous. I wish I did have some extra sensors or a camera or something. Maybe I can at least get an extra mirror, we'll see. Oh, wait, I did add an audible backup alert, but how much that helps depends on the common sense and alertness of anyone who might get in the way. But I thought it was better than nothing.

automatic lockup and stop would be ideal. Then a manual check would be done to avoid major disaster of maybe hitting a person.

All of this new technology is great but as is the case with anything man-made they can always malfunction or not tell you the whole story. So there still is nothing like also using the old fashioned way, as many posters have stated. These new features should only be used to supplement the old fashioned way, never to replace it.
Similar to GPS. Police officer: "Why did you drive your car into the pond?" brain dead driver: "My GPS told me to turn left so I turned left."
Nothing like a little common sense & always being aware of your surroundings.

I use the mirrors and my wife looks for me too, as her head turns better than mine does. Between the two of us we drive safely.

All these devices are nice but are not available on all cars yet. Some cars have radar all around the vehicle, it won't let you change lanes if there is another vehicle there. It will also slow you down or stop you if you are getting too close to the vehicle ahead of you. It will keep you from backing into another vehicle. Some will even park the car for you automatically. The day is coming when all we will have to do is program where we want to go, sit back and the car will do the rest.

None of these. Even if I did have all those special things, I wouldn't use them. With my current car that doesn't have any fancy extras, I do it the old tried and true of looking around and using my mirrors correctly. If you don't know how to park your vehicle without an automated voice telling you how, don't buy the car. Keep your mind sharp, people! And this is coming from a 21-year-old female. I like to think for myself, thank you very much, car companies.

A giant hammer is activated to fly out the rear of my car and when it smashes something, the distance is relayed back to the dash readout.
