2 teen girls who fell asleep while sunbathing on Pa. road are struck by car, flown to hospital

The Washington Post -- Police say two teenage girls who fell asleep while sunbathing on a rural Pennsylvania road have been struck by a car.

The Beaver County Police Department tells WTAE-TV (http://bit.ly/KoTXi9 ) that 13-year-olds Samantha Schermanhorn and Kaylie George were hit by the vehicle Sunday afternoon.

Two of Samantha’s cousins tell the station that their 19-year-old brother had stopped at a stop sign and made a turn before striking the girls with his car.

Nicole and Nicholas Beck say the girls were conscious and told them that they had fallen asleep while suntanning. The cousins say their brother was questioned by police after the crash.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. near 37th Avenue and Elm Street, just south of Camelback Road. Air15 video showed a white passenger car and a blue pickup truck involved in the crash near Alhambra High School. Crump said the white car was trying to pass a vehicle when it collided with the pickup truck. Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said the boy who died was about 5 years old and was in the white passenger car. The boy and two young adults in the vehicle were unrestrained, Crump said. He said the two adults in the white passenger car were taken to the hospital with very serious injuries. The driver of the pickup truck appears to be OK, Crump said. He was reportedly wearing a seatbelt.
