A pedestrian caused an accident. Is she liable?

The Globe and Mail -- In a chain collision, it doesn’t matter why the first driver had to slam on the brakes – it could be a pedestrian, a rolling shopping cart or an errant llama – the cars behind should leave enough room to stop in time, police say.

In BC, there could be tickets for following too closely

The pedestrian wouldn’t be required to remain in the scene, but she could get a ticket for illegally crossing. In BC, that’s a $109 fine. But she wouldn’t be legally responsible for the accident

Once the hand starts flashing and the countdown begins, it’s illegal to start crossing, police say

“People see the countdown start and think that’s how much time they have to make it across. But if you get hit after you started crossing against that light, you could be charged

In ON, that’s covered under sec.144

gas: you're right. As long as the law twisters stand to make money from it, they will try to find ways.

If you make it across the street on the green lite - the pedestrian has the right of way - no ticket if the count down is going. I have a 5 MPH walking pace - I'll make it across.

Here, green lights mean proceed when safe, so you could be at fault entering an intersection on green. If crossing traffic hadn't cleared, it wasn't safe. Bicycles routinely run red lights and should be subject to citations.

Traffic cops don't care to do enforcement until after the fact. That is always too late. And of course people never learn. The only ones who learn are dead!!!
