"government's ongoing effort to reduce fuel consumption, US dependence on foreign oil"

What a Lie! The gov allows the importing of oil and then says we need to get off foreign oil. Stop exporting.

Stronger, lighter materials are needed for many things, more than just autos.

badbonita, the US does not export oil. She exports refined products. The US is a net importer of oil.

Why is this admin so bent on spending money needlessly? Let the free market work in developing or enhancing current practices in lightweight materials. This DOE plan sounds like another Solyndra plan. Remind you that the WH admin, congressmen and senators have insider trading info on Wall Street and will use it to line their pockets with cash. Our founding fathers would roll in their graves if they could know that the US government is so corrupt.

All levels of government in the US are corrupt. Last winter I got a ticket for making an illegal left turn. The road was covered with snow thus none of the lane markings were visable and I was in direct line with the overhead left turn lane sign and left turn signal light at an intersection but the cop wrote me a ticket anyway. The ticket held a 3 point violation. I took pictures of the road conditions and went to traffic court. The DA office offered me a plea deal to a lesser offense for a 1 point violation. I refused the plea offering and met with the judge and he wouldn't even allow me to present my evidence and set a trial date in court, warned me that he could see my case in court and that he felt that I'd lose my case in court. By law, he had to give me a 72 hour period of time to change my mind if I wished to. I wish that I had a tape recorder with me to record what the judge had said to me. I thought about it for a couple of days and returned to the traffic court. Rather than take time off from work and hire a trial lawyer to defend me in court - I accepted the plea bargain and paid the $75 fine. Police and city/county court judges are mandated by mayors to generate as much revenue as possible. That is corrupt government.

If the DOE funds the research on developing the materials then they should be charging the car companies for the use of the materials developed high enough to recover all costs plus an ongoing profit for the government.

I've got an idea on how to reduce the U.S.'s dependence on foreign oil - quit exporting the oil that the US produces. If we don't send it away, we won't have to buy oil to replace it thus reducing the amount needed to purchase.

Just a suggestion to the White House.

Maybe focus on the debt and joblessness and governing the country and a little less time on investments might payoff in the long run. Leave the investing to Wall Street that we all just bailed out.

As if the auto giants aren't already looking for lighter materials. Carbon fiber composites? Another excuse to invade the market by "BIG" brother.

Are they insane? Lighter vehicles = less safe vehicles. We will soon see entirely recycled plastic vehicles soon. My kid's toys are safer than this prospect!

The "White House" approved the expenditure. Notice, no name, no responsibilty, no accountability except when it comes this November.

No thank you to the coffin on wheels approach for vehicles.
