Average fuel economy declines in April

Chicago Tribune -- The average fuel economy of new cars and trucks purchased in April declined slightly from March as consumers bought more trucks and SUVs, according to TrueCar.com.

But motorists didn't exactly return to the gas-guzzling days of last decade. In April, the fuel economy average of new vehicles purchased was 23.3 m.p.g. compared with 23.4 m.p.g. in March.

In April, the price of gas moderated after peaking at a national average of $4 per gallon for regular in late March, according to AAA. On Friday, the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.80, according to AAA.

Although the decline in gas prices was modest, it was enough to cause the percentage of trucks and SUVs purchased by consumers to increase, said Jesse Toprak, vice president of market intelligence at TrueCar.com.

In April, 46.6%

I think some of the comments on this article are entirely 'inappropriate'. Especially such as 'Whatever', 'Yes' and 'Interesting'. Please tone it down.

When the price trends back up, and guaranteed it will, those consumers who bought those big gas guzzlers will be the first ones to cry foul.

Pretty short sighted on the consumers' part and even more short sightedness by the car manufacturers.

Somehow it doesn't seem all that logical that a few cents drop in gas prices - which won't last - is enough impetus to buy a truck or SUV they will have to pay for over 3-5 yrs. Beyond that both scu227 and gabisgram are right.

That equates to .10/per one hundred gallons. I think you could recoup that by conserving and driving a couple of miles less.

It's amazing to me that people will plunk down $40K over a few pennies change in gas price? Is it going to stay there? I doubt it.

Not exactly Obama 54 mpg. yet, we all be riding scooters by 2025, if EPA keep detuning the European model auto to save a little co, and let the Chinese burn coal and the southeast Asia burn NATURAL GAS WITH 20 co2, going straight up the stack in to the jet stream to America. Our EPA requirements are killing the ecomony, shutting down industry. closing refineries, and we buying import from the worlds greatest polluters

it's the economy and manufacturers catering to those willing to pay more for the larger vehicles than the more efficient ones. as the economy gets better, sales of larger vehicles will increase again and the manufacturers have already been planning for that to happen ;)

Looks like Americans have already adjusted to higher gas prices by returning to the heavy gas pedal action.

What type of car would people buy if they were truly free and if fuel was priced at only $1.00 (or less) per gallon? Well, it seems obvious that they would NOT be buying the EVs (those vehicles slightly larger than pregnant roller skates) those being pushed by BO and his Republican predecessor. With gas currently at just slightly less than $4.00 per gallon, they are still purchasing SUVs and Pick-up trucks.

The sad part is that we consider ourselves to be FREE, but in reality, we are vassals to an out of control FEDERAL government. No matter how liberally you define freedom, we are less free in many respects than the serfs living in Feudal times. How can this be? Don't we live in a Democratic Republic? Don't WE determine who our leaders will be?

Well, it's not the FORM of government which determines how much freedom you possess, but the AMOUNT. We could be living under a benevolent dictator who allowed a wide array of rights; taking a small amount of money (taxes) so that the citizens of his kingdom could keep more. Wouldn't that be better than being free to elect our governing officials and paying 60% of our income to the various levels of government? Those aforementioned "serfs" were only paying about ONE THIRD of their sustenance to the king and we considered them to be SLAVES.
