BMW Pushes Solar Power With New Parntership

Forbes -- BMW has taken another step in what is shaping up to be a multifaceted electric vehicle initiative that focuses on spurring infrastructure and lifestyle changes among consumers, as much as touting the vehicles themselves.

A new partnership between BMW and Real Goods Solar, a Louisville, Colo.-based provider of residential and commercial solar technology, will allow owners of current BMW ActiveE experimental electric vehicles and future buyers of the i3, BMW’s first full-production EV scheduled to launch in 2013, to buy solar panels for their homes at up to a 35% discount.

So how come BMW is not making solar collectors for their cars? Who says solar photo voltaic cells have to be arranged in a flat grid?

If this technology and the brilliant innovative cooperation it instills in the minds of those who have the power to make a difference scares you, go hide in your fallout shelter and stay out of the way of those who want to get off the OPEC roller coaster.

You would need at least an acre of solar panels to recharge an EV, and then you would have to do it in daylight.

I have always said they should use solar on fleet vehicles like UPS trucks and US Mail trucks. With all the flatness on those 2 examples just begs for solar panels. After they are proven them make them more contoured.

What about solar powered cars? There were a few in concept and early production stages about a year ago.

I really like EV's -- so any development is a good thing, to me. I would do solar panels if they weren't so dern expensive!

Too bad it isn't US engineers leading the way with this technology. All of the companies that Pres. Obama supported with taxpayer dollars are going bankrupt, or have already folded.

give me a field of solar panels with motorized tracking to tilt the panels in order to follow the sun ,a g.e. windmill, and geo thermal for my a/c and water heater/cooler.then have the manufacturers pay for maintaining it all for life free of charge. : ) they can put up a little sign showing who is paying for it and who installed it and who is maintianing it for their advertising. : )

this is one idea that i hope pans out, but $7,000 worth of solar panels on a house will not recharge the cars battery AND heat water for the house...
